They stop every hour to let the smokers get a hit, only adds about five hours to everyones journey :-)

Take Nicotine patches with you, feel and measure her tomatoes, and submit for the competition, Job done

I am still here! It's the silly season though so not getting much time to pop in.

FC: Re the Moneymaker, they have a bad reputation as being tasteless, but I think even these grown at home taste 10 times better than the factory grown supermarket ones. Moneymaker are very reliable and productive, personally I think there are other nicer tasting varieties available and we should start a new thread soon to rate all the ones we have grown between us this year (give it a week or two when everyone's have come on stream).

Scrungee: I don't think tomatoes can get blackleg so it must be something else. I had a similar experience to Vince with my outdoor plants about 3 weeks ago, I thought they all had blight and as I only noticed it on the morning when I was off on holiday I had no time to spray - just stripped the affected leaves off. Coming back after a week they had grown like mad and now are very healthy looking, since then all my outdoor tomatoes have ripened fruit. I'm not able to pick them fast enough and the pesky birds are getting them - I need to net them but tomorrow I'm off to the Olympics so they will have to take their chance.

I'm no stranger to growing toms and I am generally very successful with them, that is except for this year.

I have around 30 plants in one tunnel (san marzano) and around 20 in another (costoluto)...and even though they have flowered continually I do not have a single tomato....not even one.

There is no sign of rot, virus or pest problems at all as the plants look healthy and have grown well. The flowers come, bloom and then fall off but with no fruit behind it. The only thing I can think is that some nights temps have dropped to below 10c, one morning a couple of weeks ago it was 8 degrees in the tunnel at 9.30am.

                  Dissapointing year for the toms.

                  Steve...:)

Same sort of story here, hardly any fruits on polytunnel tomatoes and some plants with none at all. The outdoors ones are fairing better, but with a much smaller and later crop than normal. My Tumbler tomatoes grown at home in window boxes haven't produced a single tomato.

And something else I've never noticed before is how the birds are eating them when they're almost ripe - perhaps this is because I've had so many tomatoes before that I've never noticed it.

Or maybe a shortage of berries in the wild, Anne and I went out for a walk yesterday and only berries we could see are Blackites, no sloes, damson or rowan berries to be seen, even when looking closely at known trees.

                  Steve...:)

I think it will be a rather barren harvest for both man and a lot of wildlife Steve. I will try to ensure I keep my seed feeders full.
I saw a report on TV yesterday about Wheat and Soya crop failures in the USA and I had strong feelings of concern. We will be paying a lot,lot more for our daily bread I reckon,

I'm not certain our own Cereal crops are going to be that good Kristen.
But I do love Spicy Squash soup,
