My nine plants mean toms for brekkie,lunch and dinner!!

 

I'm no stranger to growing toms and I am generally very successful with them, that is except for this year.

I have around 30 plants in one tunnel (san marzano) and around 20 in another (costoluto)...and even though they have flowered continually I do not have a single tomato....not even one.

There is no sign of rot, virus or pest problems at all as the plants look healthy and have grown well. The flowers come, bloom and then fall off but with no fruit behind it. The only thing I can think is that some nights temps have dropped to below 10c, one morning a couple of weeks ago it was 8 degrees in the tunnel at 9.30am.

Dissapointing year for the toms.

Same sort of story here, hardly any fruits on polytunnel tomatoes and some plants with none at all. The outdoors ones are fairing better, but with a much smaller and later crop than normal. My Tumbler tomatoes grown at home in window boxes haven't produced a single tomato.

And something else I've never noticed before is how the birds are eating them when they're almost ripe - perhaps this is because I've had so many tomatoes before that I've never noticed it.

 

Or maybe a shortage of berries in the wild, Anne and I went out for a walk yesterday and only berries we could see are Blackites, no sloes, damson or rowan berries to be seen, even when looking closely at known trees.

I think it will be a rather barren harvest for both man and a lot of wildlife Steve. I will try to ensure I keep my seed feeders full.
I saw a report on TV yesterday about Wheat and Soya crop failures in the USA and I had strong feelings of concern.We will be paying a lot,lot more for our daily bread I reckon,

Wish I had planted Wheat instead of Winter Squash this year ...

 

I'm not certain our own Cereal crops are going to be that good Kristen.
But I do love Spicy Squash soup,

In my case: Some Wheat is better than No Squash :(

 

Aaaah, have you had a Winter Squash crop failure?
