I try to avoid back-up sowings, seed is so expensive. £3 or so for 6 seed isn't unusual I'll sow my toms destined for outdoors in April, plenty soon enough

 

Greenfly? Not heard of that before on seedlings. Maybe I've been lucky. Although, thinking about it, the young fleshy growth must be a tempting treat.

 

For Tomatoes? Sounds quite expensive to me ... I normally get 10 - 15 seeds in a packet for £2-3, and as I only want a couple of plants of each variety I sow 5 seeds as I don't expect the seed to remain viable for more than 3 years.

If seed is expensive you could sow "fewer" and use side-shoots as cuttings - although they will be a bit alter coming on-stream - but if you can raise the young "mother" plants indoors you can counteract that by sowing early
