Me too, Freddy. The sowing next weekend will be followed by a second back up sowing in the first week of April.:snork:

              Hiya Mandy.

I try to avoid back-up sowings, seed is so expensive. £3 or so for 6 seed isn't unusual:hate-shocked: I'll sow my toms destined for outdoors in April, plenty soon enough:blue thumb:

Hi Freddy, the only reason I sow twice is that two years ago on the first sowing although they all germinated but they were attacked by Greenfly when they were about 4" high and that set them back badly:gaah: . Luckily I had some spare seeds of all the varieties and sowed again, this time keeping a sharper eye on them. It was due to the fact that pressure of work had made me unable to check on them as frequently as I should.........I'm not making the same mistake as last time. The first sowings recovered although I lost some because of the weakening of the Greenfly but the second sowings saved the day and to be honest both sowings cropped at the same time.:coffee:

Greenfly? Not heard of that before on seedlings. Maybe I've been lucky. Although, thinking about it, the young fleshy growth must be a tempting treat.

For Tomatoes? Sounds quite expensive to me ... I normally get 10 - 15 seeds in a packet for £2-3, and as I only want a couple of plants of each variety I sow 5 seeds as I don't expect the seed to remain viable for more than 3 years.

If seed is expensive you could sow "fewer" and use side-shoots as cuttings - although they will be a bit alter coming on-stream - but if you can raise the young "mother" plants indoors you can counteract that by sowing early :)

I also tend to only sow sparingly, one of my tomato seed packets is dated 2006 and I have had a good germination rate again within 3 or 4 days
