We never do anything like that! Everything gets put straight into Wickes MPC and takes its chance and we never seem to have a problem. :blue thumb:

I do all that for seed sowing which is one of the main reasons I'm using the baggie method wherever possible.
There are certain plants (ie; borderline hardy or just known to be downright fussy) where I do it as well apart from the microwave bit..

We don't allow the seeds to be fussy. They're told to grow nicely, and they do! :)

Shineyland must have a direct line to the man upstairs then :snork: In that case I'll send you my Tacca seeds to germinate for me :heehee:
Thankfully I'm blessed with patience - this Ferraria seed germinated after eighteen months............

Does your Ferraria come in 'international racing red'? :roflol:

Where appropriate, some seeds are put in our seed sprouter. :blue thumb: Everything else is straight into MPC. Mrs Shiney's attitude to everything is that it will work. :dbgrtmb:

Seeds germinate nicely, acid loving plants do OK in the garden although the soil is alkaline (her comment about that is always the same 'if you don't tell it that it's not supposed to like our soil it won't know')! Wild birds let her pick them up, she's even picked up swans :rolleyespink:.

Even handling tarantulas doesn't bother her. :hate-shocked:

We had one move into our flat in Sydney not long after we moved in. It was like a dog and would follow you around the flat!

So, to paraphrase Mrs Shy Knee: "If you don't tell it it's not a dog, how will it know" :heehee:

I'm planning to get my waterproofs on (snorkel as well, if necessary!) and get some sorting out done today. I want to finish the compost bins (need to put a divider in, and finish the ends of the lower boards).

I've also got lots of summer bulbs to plant up - I might put them in the pots around my climbing roses, as they will have to spend a year in pots, whilst I decide where to put them....

Bought a bag of leaves, popped a few in a glass with some tap water and :fingers crossed:
Today, one week later .... I have roots!! :hapfeet:
Time to set up the old washing up bowl outside methinks :)

Lolimac - I just read here that you microwave your compost. I realise bought compost is sterile and have often wondered about this. Whilst I can see this kills the bugs etc....doesn't it also kill off the nutrients in the soil or are minerals unaffected by this process? It then becomes devoid of organic matter - so just provides texture? Are bags of horse manure sterile? Sorry, just curious.

You can't kill the elements of the periodic table. You can combine them to make a compound as in H2O = Water. Sterilising should kill off living matter as in bacteria and hopefully weed seeds.

I have some in one of my half barrels M. It takes the rain chain from my shade roof so gets a changeover of water for most of the year. I found it in a local ditch. Lovely to have fresh sprigs 'on tap'. Good luck
