    Kandy, I think this is where there is confusion between what the legal profession call Midsummer Day and what is general thought as midsummer day.

    The legal one is the date on which commercial rents are due which is what the 24th June is.

    The more normally accepted midsummer day is the summer solstice which is usually the 21st June. You are correct that it alters with it being a leap year but that is only by a few hours. This year the solstice was 11.59 p.m. on the 20th so the sunrise this morning is the solstice sunrise or 'midsummer day'.

    Walnut may have already beaten me to this explanation but I won't know until I post this :D

    Morning Cookie, you posted whilst I was typing and talking to Oscar who was miaowing outside my window :). His voice has come back but not quite as loud as before - but I'm sure he will work up to it.

    I didn't say what the weather was like here :eek: but it is dull, very mild and only drizzled for less than an hour earlier this morning.

    The actual celestial solstice occured as Kandy said on the 20th at 23:59 hrs so the next day the 21st is actually the first day of summer and the longest day it allways takes plce on the 21st the variation in the actual time is caused through the slightly eliptical orbit around the sun,midsummers day is as Shiney points out the 24th,everybodys right.
    One for my Cookie and other sky watchers, although we will have Moon to contend with in the predawn hours, we will as we pass through another portion of the Ophiuchid meteor stream. The radiant for this pass will be nearer Sagittarius and the fall rate varies from 8 to 20, but it can sometimes produce unexpectedly more we don't usually see many in the summer months due to the light in the skies.(my druids robes kept getting stuck in my bike wheels this morning):D

    It's raining and quite chilly in London. Newly planted stuff is just sitting around wondering whether it's worth growing I think :( Still lawn can do with a good soaking.

    Thanks Nutty - another one for me to miss because of Devon cloud!! :)

    Here is a beautiful poem for you and all celestial admirers.
    Christina Rossetti

    De Profundis

    Oh why is heaven built so far,
    Oh why is earth set so remote?
    I cannot reach the nearest star
    That hangs afloat.

    I would not care to reach the moon,
    One round monotonous of change;
    Yet even she repeats her tune
    Beyond my range.

    I never watch the scatter'd fire
    Of stars, or sun's far-trailing train,
    But all my heart is one desire,
    And all in vain:

    For I am bound with fleshly bands,
    Joy, beauty, lie beyond my scope;
    I strain my heart, I stretch my hands,
    And catch at hope.

    Rain all day yesterday & drizzle here up to 10 minutes ago as the sun has made an appearance & it now feels rather humid! Rather nice I think! :)
