Portuguese Laurels are quite good - evergreen and much smaller leaved than the Cherry Laurel - you can get them quite tall and they're nowhere...
Yes - pricey! I think they have gone up dramatically this last year. I bought them Feb just before the first lockdown and the pleached trees...
Just a note about Cherry Laurel (as I had considered that myself) when you cut them back the leaves look a bit "hacked" as the leaves are so chunky.
Got about a tonne if compost shifted and now the wind has got up too much and its rainy and I'm shattered-so will continue another day-probably...

I've bought a lot of pleached trees for above fence height screening. But at that height they do cost a bit - but much nicer than having leylandii...
