It's quite hardy especially as mine is in a quarter barrel planter. There's a powder on them that can irritate you when you prune. Apart from that...

That's MSDS is 22 years old. Try this one. aluminium ammonium sulphateI just checked the Merck MSDS and it says it is not a hazardous substance...
Spray any area with 10.4g/L of Aluminium Ammonium Sulphate and it will deter most animals including cats, dogs, birds and rabbits.
