I would love to! However there is about 40cm of snow on top of it right now! As soon as it melts I will be sure to post some pictures, I also intend to get a blog set up for it. That way I can document everything that happens AND keep a journal of sorts for future reference.

Well done on securing the job, sounds a fantastic opportunity.
Some of the suggestions regarding planting and use of blood meal may the natural deterrents you are looking for?

Looking forward to your updates on the project
      Good luck

      Thank you!

I had looked at blood meal, I'll see how easy it is to find over here. I stumbled onto a site dedicated to removing rabbits and there were suggestions for strong smells and tastes that you could dilute and spray onto the plants, such as chillis and black pepper, but I would rather try the bonemeal first

Contrary to what I first was told, this job is not at all what I was interviewed for. I was interviewed for the position of head gardener and tasked with getting the gardens back on firm after a few years of very very basic maintenance (I'm talking grass cutting with a flymo, that is it). I have spent 80%of my time at the bosses boat warehouse scrubbing decks. I've been taught how to clean the outside of the boat and paint the under, then instructed to move onto the next and do the same. He refuses to let me use the overhead lights whilst I work and instead gives me a small headlamp, which slows progress.

The garden work has become perfectly clear to me, removal. I am to clear sticks from the grass, then clear sticks from the waters edge. This is all I have been allowed to do in the three months I have been there. Literally.

On top of this mundane, mind numbing work, I am pestered daily to work over, and then tried to be made to feel guilty for not. Here is a word by word conversation that took place (I had recorded it because I think he Is going to lay me off due to my lack of overtime):

"okay, it's 5pm now, I'm heading out. See you tomorrow "
"you're not staying? *sigh* I'll have to call my son to come and do some work in HIS evening because you won't. "
"well I'm sorry but I'm contracted 8-5, 40 hours per week. I have stuff to do outside of work"
"I guess you are rich then. Mr rich guy doesn't need more money."
"no, you don't pay me enough to be rich. I'm just very conscious of my health, and I have a problem with my hip right now, and I hurt my wrists trying to do the job faster last week for you"
"I work 7 days a week, my sons work 7 days. Why can't you?"
"I'm going. I'll see you tomorrow"
      "fine."

Oh, and to top all of this off, I have been told outright that I'm not allowed to use the lawnmower. Just let that sink in....

The GARDENER is not allowed to CUT THE GRASS. With no explanation.

Time to look for another job!

Sounds like a really strange employer!
Good luck with the job search.

I'm sorry to hear it hasn't worked out for you MH. Hang on to that conversation you may need it. Is there any form of authority in Sweden that you can take this too as the man has employed you under false pretences, he also isn't providing you with necessary equipment.

Unfair as it is, sometimes it's better to just cut and run especially if you've decided already that you don't want to stay with this employer and you're ready to move on. I know that's how bad employers get away with it but, especially when it's a situation where you would actually be facing the person every day, you have to think about exactly what you would gain by following this up.

I think you said you were a friend of his son? If so you could lose a friendship as well as a job unless of course this situation has already soured your friendship.

They say that in the long term things happen for the best, I hope a perfect job is just around the corner. Good luck.

I'm glad that "adventure" is over, yeah. I had also started to cough a lot from the fumes and dust in the place. So hopefully that will recede.

It's sad to hear that MH but you are probably well out of it! File it all away as experience and start afresh with someone that will respect you and your abilities. :)
