        Lets assume that we can blag some free seeds (we might not be able to, but lets not worry about that bit for now).

        Any ideas on a plan? Lets say that by some miracle, enough native wild flower seeds (including our native poppies) turned up for us all to share, any thoughts on what to do next?

            Roll the seeds into balls of MPC, then dry them out before they germinate? That way, they could be lobbed onto suitable verges/wasteground and would be watered in by the first following decent rainfall?

              I wonder if we could get the likes of The Bumblebee Conservation Trust on board.

                Got to be worth a shot - after all, the worst they can say is no?

                I've got another idea too - how about seeing if we can get an organisation like Network Rail involved? They must have hundreds of miles of embankments and might well have some gardening enthusiasts in there number who would be willing to spread some seed for a good cause?

                    This is a great idea, I'm up for it. So sad about those young men that fought and died in an old man's war.

                      Sorry to put a damper on this but we've been discussing it in the office and doing some research.

                      Firstly it might fall foul of the Wildlife and Countryside act 1981 if someone seed bombed in an SSSI.

                      It could be construed as damaging the flora by introducing a species not usually found in the area.

                      Most of the stuff we found about the legality was American, but it could also be taken as a form of Trespass.

                      Main problem is that it will be seen as littering. If you lob something out your car window Mr Policeman wont care if its a clay ball full of seeds or a beer can, he'll still do you for it.

                      Don't think any of the organisations we've been talking about will want anything to do with a legal minefield.

                      However, there's nothing to stop a campaign to get all those willing to use their front gardens as a tribute. Just a disturbed flower bed with Poppy seeds. It could still have an impact on the nation :)

                      Gardeners Corner would be proud to be part of such a campaign.

                        Not a damper at all...... Can I just clarify I have no intention of stepping out of line and damaging a sssi site would be dreadful .... And throwing things out of a car window is not what I personally had in mind
                        I would like this to be a organised event ... With the blessing of councils charity's etc
                        Even get garden centres to have a plant of the month and promote the idea in a professional manner............... Riots are not the way forward ...............

                          Got to agree, and it was not my intention to suggest that we stray from legal or reasonable boundaries - but, it would be good to expand this idea in any way possible; and the more organisations (councils, seed companies, garden centres, local charities etc) that join in, the better?

                            Ok, I volunteer to drop a note to the following local organisations that I know own or manage land:

                            * Redcar and Cleveland Council
                            * Redcar in Bloom committee
                            * Friends of Zetland Park
                            * Friends of Locke Park
                            * Friends of Redcar Cemetery
                            * SSI (the steel works, they have oodles of disused land)

                            Unless anyone else wants to do it, I also volunteer to drop a note to the Bumblebee Conservation Trust to see if I can blag some seeds.

                            For this to be effective, it needs to be a coordinated effort, so before I email these people, I'd like at least a couple of other to commit to trying their local organisations too.

                            I also think if we do manage to blag any seeds, it might be best if we pool resources. It would be a shame if one person blagged a surplus while someone else didn't have enough to proceed.

                            Of course there's always the option of a group purchase if nobody will give us them.
