The spectre of unfairness has tainted the thread...

Not sure where this is going now...

As a neutral observer [and a none onion grower], I don't think Jenny's remark was meant to do that, Freddy. Anyone who joins in a competition has to accept that other competitors will be more expert, experienced, have more equipment etc than them. It's the same in all competitions. Take the Photography Competition for an example. There are all levels of Photographers entering with all sorts of cameras from the "point and shoot" to the state of the art expensive DSLR, and it isn't guaranteed that the expensive DSLR owner will win.

Stick to the rules and conditions, enjoy growing the onions, applaud the efforts of the competitors, and may the best onion win.:snork:

I completely agree with Armandii & loli, there is nothing to worry about Freddy. It's all a bit of good natured banter. It's not the winning that matters it's the taking part, that's certainly true for me. Before I joined this site I always grew the same things in the same way. This competition is a great way to pick up ideas from others, so keep it up Freddy!

When I took up fishing again, I went with a mate who had a "£200 Abu fishing rod.

            I had a crab line.

Guess who caught the fish? :snork:

                Hello folks.

You will understand that I get a bit defensive when knowing of the time and effort that we all put into producing the best we can. I try to put myself into the position of the eventual winner. How would I feel if I thought that some thought I had an "unfair advantage"?

You obviously don't know about some to the secret "recipes" that other competitors have, Freddy.:heehee: I believe that Peter Glazebrook, who has grown the Worlds biggest Onion, says that the biggest thing that helped him was the 25 years it took him to learn how to grow onions that big.:snork:

                        Hi Mandy.

I'm fully aware that many of these prize winners have their 'secrets'.

                        Jenny.

Please don't misunderstand, I know you didn't mean any harm:) It's just that as the OP of the competition, I have to consider the possible feelings of all that have entered. As already stated, this is meant to be a bit of fun, indeed it is one of the 'guidelines' stated in post #68:) There's no hatchet to bury...

This comp to me is just a bit of fun. Every one will have a different method like heated prop, grow box with lights etc i my self started mine in an unheated prop on a windw sill. But I read them stories and play them classical music. Is that an unfair advantage? Maybe? Who nos. it's light hearted fun after all no money or prizes envolved. Just pride lol. So game on!!!!!

My new idea is to talk to them (a la Prince Charles). Anyway I can't get a word edgeways indoors, so the plants will have to listen :)

Ok, I've got heated propagators but as I've previously mentioned, I'm way behind because I've had far more matters to worry about.

I'm confident I'll catch up, this is my fourth year of growing large onions and you learn as you go, my onion beds were prepared last autumn as was my onion feed.

Even if I don't grow a monster onion, I'll know that I've done the best I can for all the other veggies I'm growing this year!
