2013 Onion Growing Challenge

They da be a bit spindly, but should be ok

 

I will find a good use for them in my Cottage garden borders. I know, having seen it in my Aunt Rosie's garden, that Linaria can get unruly in the wind. And some Campanulas need keeping in check too,

Hiya.

These 'supports', are they for holding up the onions, or are they to prevent damage? Or both?

 

The leaves want to be kept vertical at all times and not allowed to kink.

Onion leaves are hollow and must be kept turgid to allow the photosynthesis process to work at its optimum level,kinks would reduce the process.

 

But, presumably the supports are taken off at some stage?

 

I suppose it's when the leaves are sturdy enough to stand on their own...

 

The top growers will leave them in place until harvesting time!

 

Wouldn't it be great to grow one that big .....i'm thinking Giant Beer Battered Onion Rings

 

Nothing wrong with aiming high John, but I won't be holding my breath waiting for a sixteen 'pounder'
