Well done Loli, they are nice and strong looking.

I want to plant mine out this evening, it's taking longer and longer shifting everything in and out of the g.house mornings and evenings. Yesterday I accidentally dropped a sunflower plant so for their own sake they need to be outside.

          Hiya folks.

I too decided it was time to get them out. Apart from anything else, they were starting to look a bit stressed, indeed, some of them were starting to form a bulb. I've put some fleece over them so hopefully they'll be ok, even with 0c forecast tonight. This Onion growing malarchy ain't easy is it!

          Cheers...Freddy

Oh yes, with ref to this...

"3. Three photos to be submitted for seed grown onions are...at the 'crook' stage, two months after planting out, and at the 'weigh-in'."

I was thinking that the 'two months' deadline could be set for 1st July?

Well I didn't have time to plant mine out tonight :(

What sort of distance are you all planting out at?

Mine are looking distinctly unhappy - I evicted them outside a couple of weeks ago, although they remain in their trays for now, but they are now looking a bit of a mess to be honest. My leeks are about the same.

I won't give up just yet, but I doubt very much that I will be anywhere near in the running competition wise.

12" is about what I'm planning to go for - just to maximise the space.

No don't give up FC, I'm sure you will get something from them, there is a long way to go yet, once the weather properly warms up they will start to grow quick.

                      Hiya John.

I'd say mine are roughly 12" apart, maybe a bit less. 18 Onions in a bed 8'x4'

I've never used leaf support before, never seemed a problem, but I'll have a go this year and see if it makes a difference, half the bed supported, half not...... all those up the allotment will be un-supported, unless I decide otherwise! :dancy:

Unfortunately I've been far too busy dealing with other stuff to deal with all sorts of things, my onions included, and I've been too embarrassed to own up to my onions being neglected (plus attacked by whitefly) to the extent where they went beyond it.

                        But I have a 'Plan B' and 'Plan C':

                        B) The 'grown from sets' class. My overwintering sets planted both in polytunnel and outside all kept getting eaten down to ground level by mice, but I have planted another 200.

                        C) Bought in plants. I've just potted up 55 (should have been 50) 'Showmaster' onion plants bought from Marshalls on BOGOF (offer now may have expired and perhaps was only available via targeted email link, order was 2x25) for £6.75 (+ I wangled free P&P - don't ask me how!) http://www.marshalls-seeds.co.uk/onion-showmaster-plants-pid2341.html

                        showmaster.png

All potted up and watered with seaweed fertilizer.
