Freddy, if the top is flat and the polythene thin you could get rainwater ponding on top.

 

Good point...I'll have to see how it transpires

 

Blue water pipe will make good hoops; they will be stable if pushed onto some rods that are, themselves, rigid (e.g. perhaps attach them to your uprights).

I do that for Brassica Cabbage White protection - the blue pipe "hoops" are pushed on to short pieces of bamboo rammed well into the soil.

I suppose a wire down the middle, so the roof is like a "tent", might well do too?

 

Maybe a good idea (if it becomes a problem) to just put in some holes....

 

My mini bush toms are now surging ahead



Still no flowers yet.

 

Which surprises me as it's only 5 weeks 3 days since I sowed the seeds and they haven't seen any natural light yet.

I'd love to find a book about how to grow/bring stuff vegetables/herbs/etc, on under grow lights, but all I about can find is about growing dodgy, illegal stuff.

P.S. I've also got seed sown Basil to virtually shop pot herb size in those 5.5 weeks.

In essence, the same thing. What I didn't want, was a second greenhouse. What I was looking for was a way to extend the season, which for me is growing outdoors

I reckon that final "roll up" one looks pretty good. Somewhere to "park" the plastic, and cheap water pipe for the hoops. Batons, presumably, to stabilise the structure.

 

Just over 6 weeks after sowing (27/12/2012) and the first flower buds are showing.

As I've got plenty of mini bush toms like the one above (20 Red Robin and 20 Minibel) + plenty of time yet, I'm going to try pinching the growing points out of several plants of each variety (those last to show flower buds) to checkout how that will make them bush up, so I'll know what's best for my main tomato sowing around the beginning of March.

P.S. Jenny I'll be sowing some of your saved Maskotka seeds soon to check how well they respond to early sowing/lights.
