If you have a gas bottle already (e.g. BBQ) it might be worth keeping en eye on eBay / freecycle etc. for a gas greenhouse heater. I got one for about 20 quid. I think they are useful if you can't get power to greenhouse to give you a guaranteed minimum of 10C during the Spring. I reckon I could maintain that pretty easily from early March here, perhaps a bit later up your way though. Only need to light it on cold nights, and it has a thermostat (albeit rather crude and thus inefficient)

    Just a thought.

I did that, it went through a full bottle of gas in five days, on minimum from 22:00 to 09:00 (It was the sort of gallon caravan tank type) I have a couple of what I would call normal size empties, which are cheaper to refill, but still very expensive (I am not Scrungee) :-)

Hmmm ... surprised it used that much, but sorry to hear it Jack.

Trouble with greenhouse heaters is inaccurate thermostats, and the little metal strip that bends which you get on gas heaters has to be the worse of all.

Worth using a Max/Min thermometer to see what range it gives from On to Off, sadly it may well be as much as 10C, which is very inefficient and thus expensive :(

Mine uses quite a lot of gas, and I heat with electric because it works out cheaper (I have a thermostat for the electric heat which has an on/off hysteresis range of only 0.5C which I reckon is pretty good.
