Don't worry about the lower leaves going yellow FC, it's obviously a sign that the plants are not happy, but it will be better in the long run to hold off planting outside until June.

As its the bigger varieties that are yellowing on the bottom leaves, I reckon not much will be lost - they are getting too big for their cups already, so will be moved into 9cm pots as soon as they are delivered, and I reckon they will be deep enough to cover where I cut off the yellow leaves.

It's forecast to be cold tonight around here, down to 4 deg C, so I've covered all my tomato plants in the greenhouses with fleece. The smaller plants I've brought back indoors and under the growlights :gaah: Looks like this cold snap will last till the weekend.

Yep, turned up the heat a bit in the greenhouse to compensate. We could surely do with a warm spell...

The "outdoor" toms have been tucked in a sheltered corner for a week and are still stout and green but no sign of new growth. The thermometer by their side says 6C right now - not good,

No that's not good, even worse is this chill wind and it's forecast for another few days. Under the fleece in my greenhouse it went down to 5C even though I've got a heating cable.

Another problem is watering, because my plants are not growing and most are now in big pots some are sitting in soggy compost for days. I'm trying to water very sparingly.

Quite a difference between the plants that have got their roots down into the water & those that haven't quite made it yet - the potato leaf types seem to particularly enjoy that & are sending lots of new stems out from the bottom of the stem.. turning into a right bunch of thugs!

Outside plants are still slowly growing, quite amazed that they haven't given up as its been cold ant night & hailing today.. must be just enough sun to keep them warm.

                  Hi all,

I'm slightly confused about the growth of my Ferline F1 toms

As you can see the buds are in 2 lots on the left branch and then there's the upright stem which has them on the top.

Is it right that there's 2 lots on the side branch?

Or have I messed up and should have cut that off earlier?

                  Hi there Triffid.

What you have there is a side-shoot that should have been taken out when it was a couple of inches long. I would take it out now. It's the one that's going straight up, not the one that's off at an angle.

ah haa thanks i see it's a side shoot (the vertical one) - funny how the side shoot is thicker than the right branch?

                    Hi Triffid.

Just so there's no confusion, as you view the picture, the branch on the right is the side-shoot, this needs taking out.

Can you confirm which to lop off Freddy?

If you refresh the page I've numbered the branches on the pic

                    Take out No2. Isn't No3 just a leaf?
