Happy to share FC :blue thumb:

This is a Gary Rhodes recipe
    2 tbsp olive oil
2 medium red onions (we have used normal ones as well)
    2 garlic cloves crushed
2 tablespoons red wine vinegar (or dark malt vinegar + 1tbsp soft brown sugar)
1lb (500g) cherry tomatoes halved (have used other frozen chopped toms too)
    10 fluid ounces passata ***
    16 fluid ounces vegetable stock
    salt and pepper to taste

***To make passata chop a tin of tomatoes in food processor add basil (we use lots) according to taste.

Fry red onions over medium heat until they start to soften (3-4 minutes)
Add garlic and slowly cook both together for about a minute or so
Add red wine vinegar to the pan and bring to the boil, cook down until only a bit of liquid is left (do not reduce too much or it will give your soup a soury taste says Gary)
Add the cherry tomato halves and fry gently for 10 minutes making sure to stir occasionally so they don't burn
Stir in the passata and vegetable stock to the tomato mixture and bring to a low boil, reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes (we do 15-20 to thicken it a bit more)
    Season to taste.

Recipe ends here - and would be a chunky tomato soup but we whizz this up with one of those hand processor things - then pass through a sieve for a smoother texture finally sprinkling a bit more chopped basil over top.

Says it serves 4-6 (but we are greedy beggars and would probably only stretch to 4) :dunno:

We freeze all tomatoes to 500g weight for this reason as it is our favourite tomato soup.

    Enjoy :)

    S

      Hello chums:)

I picked the first of my 'Country Taste' today. Never tried them before but I like to try out new varieties:blue thumb: I've got a big one on the way, this one came in at just under 10oz with no special treatment or thinning of the truss....

5,000th posting, so quite apt that it's allied to our favourite fruit:)

Yes. The top half was quite meaty and a little dry. The bottom half was much more juicy, and for a large tomato, quite tasty. I think that if one went to the trouble of pruning the trusses, it might be a contender for the 'Biggest tomato Competition'. I have around 6 toms per truss, and obviously they vary in size and shape, and have basically just let them do their own thing, so overall, I'm quite impressed. I'll grow these again:blue thumb:

Golden Pearl are cropping and ripening well now, not an outstanding flavour but very sweet.

These came from a mixed pack of seed. I'm guessing at Red Zebra.

Tamina are cropping well and started off very pale in colour, they are now starting to colour up slightly.
