2013 Tomato Growing

          I tell what i've noticed this year that i haven't had before.....my big tomatoes are obviously heavy so naturally they have been supported to take the weight but on my 'normal' tomatoes many of the trusses aren't strong enough to support even the smallest of tomatoes and have collapsed ...not snapped but 'folded' for want of a better word.....i've done nothing different this year to any other and at the moment they don't look to be suffering but it can't be doing them any good:dunno:....any ideas please:dbgrtmb:

          Can't explain that Loli, maybe it's been an exceptional year for growing but not for ripening, mine have only really started to ripen in quantity the last couple of days so maybe your trusses are just overloaded.

          As I posted somewhere earlier, last year I selected the largest Koralik tomatoes for seed saving and I've got a noticeable increase in size of tomatoes on most of the Koralik plants grown using that seed. I know @shiney grows this variety and I've found a post where @JWK said he was thinking of growing them, so how does the size of this compare to your Koraliks? (and are they also more 'round'?)

          Again this year I'll be saving seeds from only the biggest of fruits, or to be more specific, onlt saving seeds from fruits from plants on which all the tomatoes are the largest.

            I only grew them last year Scrungee, they were a bit too small, pea sized really, so I didn't bother this year. You're on to something there, how do they taset?

            I will have to get my finger out and get more harvesting done tomorrow - loads of nice ripe tomatoes between the Marmande, Maskotka and Ailsa Craigs - my one and only plant of Faworyt has some fruit starting to ripen too - a very pink colour which is a marked difference to the deep red from the Marmandes;

            The Marmande seeds I have saved have dried out too - only problem is that they have dried stuck together, so that will be a job for a day when I am a bit bored.....

              At last I'm getting loads of ripe fruit, more than we can cope with. It's taken a while. The taste has improved as well now they are in full swing.

              We ate that big Black Krim at the back for lunch, it carved like a piece of meat, we had it sliced on hot Ciabatta then toasted with basil and onion, it was lovely :) It's got a savoury salty taste competely different to the red and yellow ones.

                  I'm not going to taste them until I get a few to seed save from, but these tiddlers were rather lacking in flavour (unless roasted with garlic) last year [​IMG]

                  Once again I'm not bothering to spray them with Bordeaux Mixture so I can check out blight resistance.
