2013 Tomato Growing

Hiya Scrunge.

That's pretty much what I'm thinking of. Because I grow in raised beds, I thought I could tailor-make a structure that would sit on the framework of said raised bed. Food for thought...thanks for that

Edit: Just to add, all my raised beds are the same size, so an easy matter to move from one bed to another

 

As I extensively grow through Mypex/polythene (which produces much better tomato crops and eliminates weeding), I quickly learnt to grow everything in coordinated size beds.

What polythene are you thinking of using?

 

Nothing special. At work, we quite often get what I take to be 'regular' polythene. Having said that it does seem quite tough and also has a green tint to it. I didn't realise there might be different types? Does it make a difference?

 

Just pricked out 8 Sungolds into a cut down piece of cell tray and potted up my 20 Minibels and 20 Red Robins (2 varieties I found did well under lights last year) into 70 x 70mm pots nipping off the seed leaves (and the occasional true leaf) and burying them deep as they were starting to get a bit tightly packed in their cellular tray:

Were there any that you felt didn't do so good under lights?

I said I wouldnt sow tomatoes so early this winter but I have succumbed. Sowed some moneymaker along with some strawberries.

 

Whoops, yes but forgot to make a note of those, but it was all combined with such a rubbishy growing year I thought I'd start again with just the 3 varieties I'm growing now. If I had to say what didn't work well under light I'd guess it was 'beefsteak' toms and Koralik, but I'm not completely sure and will try all my favourites such as (already doing Sungold) Red Alert, Sweet Million & Koralik.

Ferline (blight resistant) are something I've never grown before, but as I got loads hundreds of cheap seeds from T&M when on 'special' I'll sow several of these seeds just to checkout how well they respond to being grown under lights.

I've grown Ferline for a couple of years now. Last year as with all my outdoor ones, they failed. But the year before I had a pretty good crop of nice flavoured/good sized fruits. Pretty sure they showed some blight resistance too.
