You can't possibly be a gardener without possessing a huge amount of optimism! I reckon you should bung them in and see what happens :). There's still a good 4 months of growing left :)

Maybe more? I seem to recall that @Scrungee picked his last on Christmas day once?

28/11/2011 With some occassional use of a paraffin heater in a polytunnel http://gardenerscorner.co.uk/forum/threads/my-£50-polytunnel-from-ebay.31800/page-3

If you sow now and start cropping in 100 days you should have toms in the beginning of September.

What about growing some very quick maturing Red Alert bush tomatoes? (That also have a shorter cropping period, meaning you might get nearlly all of them to ripen before the season's over).

How exciting! Hope it goes well :)

I think, if it was me, I would buy some plants in the garden centre. Everyone probably has bought theirs by now, so what's left is probably "going for a song".

If you are after specific varieties, from seed, I would still get a few plants for "early crop", and I would only sow seed of ones that start to mature early - so perhaps skip any Beefsteak or other slow-to-mature varieties.

Stick some soil in a pan, stick in seeds, water, pack them at the bottom of some really big heavy box of books and odd kitchen things, find them this Christmas when you finally unpack that box - that's how we would do it.

Just a thought, if we can work out a way of tomato plants surviving the post, I would be happy to send you some?

wrap them in a plastic bag with some water in it (then tie it and staple the knot) Then in another bag and in a box it goes.

@Freddy, let me know if this would help and I will see if I can lay hands on bags etc?

Got my toms in a bit late, but still they seem to be a weedy collection this year. Hope they get going soon or it will be curtains as far as a decent crop is concerned.
Is it just me with iffy tom development so far?
All other veg is doing well though.

I still haven't got flowers on most of mine. Some evidence of them forming but the plants are tardy. I think it hasn't been warm enough - by day nor by night,

The last couple of weeks it has been a bit cold and not enough sunlight for mine, they are way behind other years. Just getting my first flowers opening.
