2015 Growing Season

As I said, best bet (I think) would be to put them in the greenhouse during the day

 

Picked the first sprouting broccoli of the season yesterday (Early White). Very tasty it was too.

 

I'm so behind this year. Just got my earlies chitting - trying Eerstelingen this year, just fancied a change. Only sowed a few tomato seeds a few days ago, same with cucumber. Need to prep the soil to put in peas in the next few days. Nearly ready, just a final rake over to do. Not doing onions this year, they just disappeared last year - mulched into the soil as though I'd never planted anything. Not sure what else I'm going to plant, not really in a veggie mood so far, which is a shame as I've done so much work making the soil as good as it can be.

Hi. Completely new to growing your own. In fact, never been much of gardener. But I am inspired and have made a start. Just in case Growing Your Own isn't for me - I am doing everything in pots. So far I have placed my blueberry and strawberry plants outside. I have sown mint, thyme, marjoram, basil, cucumber, cherry toms, courgette, lettuce. All are in modules on windowsill except basil, marjoram and thyme which is out in my newly purchased plastic grow home. I have also directly sown outside in containers carrots, beets, spring onion and planted some pots.

In addition I now have a composter.

Really buzzing with it all but I am concerned how much watering I should do. Also if I have sown too deeply. Lettuce have just started to peek through.
Will be trawling your forum for tips and useful info.

Tomorrow I plan to sow peas, parsley and maybe radish.

Oh dear, better get a move on! I've got tomatoes, cucumber and chilli seedlings growing on the windowsill, but need to get a move on with peas, broad beans, salad leaves, radish etc. Last year ALL my peas were eaten in the garden, greenhouse etc by mice. This year i am going to sow and keep in the house to start them off...that's the plan for the weekend. Also, cucumber seedlings need potting on!

 

I sowed 8 Brussel Sprout 'Seven Hills' seeds last night for Christmas Day.

I have just ordered a couple of raised beds. As this is my first year I am using tubs, grow bags etc. If it something I enjoy I will invest in making changes to the garden. I am also planting those two types of potatoes. How long after planting would you expect to see anything. Its been two weeks for my Desiree - and nothing.

 

A month at least I would say, how deep did you plant them?

Are they doing good? I've never grown from seed before.

 

A bit spindly I'm afraid. Give them a bit more time, and hopefully they'll get a bit more stocky

 

Oh, and careful with the watering, better kept on the dry side.

 

Sort for the delayed reply - I've had a couple of IT issues.

Beets sown 14/03. Half inch deep, maybe a little deeper

Carrots sown 14/03. Half inch deep, maybe a little deeper.

Spring Onions sown 14/03. As above.

Potatoes sown 14/03 and 28/03. On top of approx 5-6 inches of compost and then covered with 1-2 inches of compost.

All outside. All in containers. All covered up under a fleece if temp has dropped below zero.

Haven't been out yet this morning. Mild night here but mega mega windy.
