I started with some seeds given to me by somebody in my village that grew biggish (very long) marrows, then bought some that produced fat marrows, they crossed (and probably also with courgettes!, but that makes the 'thinnings' delicious, today I've had some in a curry, Mrs Scrungee had some in a Lasagne, and our daughter had some in a veggie spag bol), are planted in pits of compost/horse poo/MPC/BF&B, stems buried, fed with chicken poo tea/seaweed fertilizer/Miracle Gro/etc., a bit like with pumpkins, but use a lot less space (about 6m2 in lieu of 20m2) and produce a far more usable crop - I now grow early sown, pollytunnel pot started then grown on outdoors, small bush courgettes and then swop to marrow 'thinnings' ASAP. I might get much bigger ones by changing variety, but doubt if we'd get such delicious pickings from them which are far juicier and sweeter than any courgettes.

P.S. I also think that 'baby' giant pumpkins are superb for eating and I'm tempted to leave as many as possible on to grapefruit size before using in cooking.

And my young, undersize 'giant' runner beans are also more tender than full size runners of 'normal' varieties, don't believe what some people say about big veg being 2nd rate eating.

Been away for a week on holiday, came to back and picked these, plus a few courgettes I forgot to photo:

Had to give away most of those cucumbers, we still had a couple left from before the hols.

Mine appear to be nowhere near ripening yet. They're a good size though, if not that many fruits.

It's grown a bit - nearly 4 feet girth now. Hoping it's now over 50lbs and heading towards 60lbs in time for our village show.

The foliage was just like the Carrots next to it but more spread out. From looking on google it's more like Hemlock than a parsnip for both the foliage and root. It didn't smell like a freshly dug out carrot either. Neither was the root poking out the ground like a Carrot.

The wife only had a nibble, I think we may have been lucky this time!
