2015 Tomato Growing

    Hiya chums:)
    So, I'm wondering whether or not to start 'stopping' a Maskotka (bush) I have growing in a pot? Loads of side-shoots, plenty of flowers,although mostly unopened, and a few fruits forming. A bit concerned as time is getting on.

      Everything is so far behind this year, its remarkable, but then maskotka tend to ripen reasonably quickly so you might be in with a chance yet. Its a hard one to call, as being outside they will be that bit slower without that wee bit more warmth - maybe leave it for another few weeks and then stop them?

      Dunno, my instinct is to stop them, so that they can get on with producing fruit. Just wanted the thoughts of others :blue thumb:

      I thought you just left bush tomatoes to do their own thing, trying to stop them is tricky as they just produce more growing points. I'd leave them alone Freddy.

        Side shoots are the ones that form in the 'joint' between the stem and the leaf. The white arrows on your pics below show stem & leaf, the red shows the side shoot that wants removing.

          So the first image I need to remove that big thick stem you have the red mark on? and the thick stem and smaller on in the last picture?

            Double check it first, as the first image it is hard to see which is stem and which is sideshoot. Here is a (very, very rough) drawing that might make it easier to know which is which - the green lines are the stem and the leaves, and the blue ones will be the side shoots coming out of the joint between stem and leaf.

            It does seem really brutal, as some of them can be really surprisingly large (I removed two yesterday that were decent sized plants in their own right!), but don't worry too much - tomatoes really want[/] to grow, so they are fairly tough when it comes to stuff like this.

              Thanks for all the help. much appreciated as I know nothing about how to grow stuff. I've copied what you put so can you check please to make sure I've done it correct.

              Also do I need to take anything from these ones? which are a smaller cherry ones

              Looks good :) - just check the one second to last as it looks as though it has a side shoot just above the tie?
