The problem then I think is that you let them go nearly dry. I tend to water a little and often, unless the ground is clearly soaking, as it can be early in the season. Curling leaves is quite common, and isn't usually a problem. As the plant grows, the bottom leaves will often turn yellow and can be removed. I suppose if they weren't removed, they would turn brown?

The ones in the greenhouse, were they in the ground? If so, has that ground been repeatedly used?
The ones outside look fine

I'll assume they are a Cordon variety. They should have had the sideshoots removed, but these look like they've been left to do their own thing. They also look like they have Botrytis, which might well have been avoided with good ventilation. I would just bin them and put it down to experience, there's always next year :)

That's a useful tactic when growing from the likes of expensive non-F1 seeds [1], from a sowing of low germination, etc. In those circumstances I let side shoots develop to a reasonable size, cut them off (or tug off if from below soil level as those should have some roots), put them in a jar of water for a week or two until they've produced plenty of roots, then pot up but place somewhere not too hot & sunny for a few days until they establish.

The resulting plants can bear tomatoes very close to soil level and can be used to dramatically increase seed stocks. I bought 5 very expensive seeds earlier this year, sowed 4, and now have about 10 extra plants using this method of propagation, enabling me to keep them in various locations in case of blight and (hopefully) save seeds from 14 plants in lieu of only 4.

Alternatively, the original plants can be restricted to only 1 (or 2) fruits to produce giant tomatoes for competition, and the clones used to produce as many ripe fruits as possible for seed production.

[1] Plus an inexpensive way of increasing stock grown from F1 seeds.
