    That 2020 milestone is just a target though, I don't think industry has any intention of removing peat across the board without being forced despite all the rhetoric from retailers.

      I agree, Loofah. The real pressure is coming from the more extremists in the "Green" organisations who are trying to place their own agendas into public and government view.:coffee::dunno::snorky:

              Hello, want to make a success at growing toma this year as been rubbish in the past.

              These are my san marzano and red cherry toms...

              Are they ready to plant out into final pots yet? Was going to do these pots....or maybe invest in a quad grow or similar.

                They look a bit small yet Snorky, are they all going in a greenhouse? Just that I grow my San Marzano outside (and mine are much smaller than yours so won't be going outdoors till late May).

                  @JWK I was intending on growing in the greenhouse. I might put a few on the lotty as don't want to overcrowd the grreenhouse and end up with fungus/mould problems.

                  Precisely one week later and all the toms in the 24x cell trays are now in 60mm square pots, and all toms in 40x cell trays are now in 24x. Now down to 264 plants. At that this rate they should be ready for tunnels [1]towards end May and open ground first week in June.


                  [1] That's planting in tunnel soil borders. They will be placed in tunnels earlier, but stay in pots in case of cold weather requiring stacking and protection or if very cold complete evacuation.

                    Good plan Snorky. They look good if they are in your greenhouse over-night. Personally I've never planted mine before May due to the possibility of late frosts, I think it may be a couple of degrees warmer higher up on a potting shelf rather than right down at soil level so I'd leave them a week or two for the time being.

                      We had a thread on here about Quad Grows, there are pros and cons. I did have one for a while but it never did as well as me growing directly in the soil. Others have done better. They are quite costly, so before investing maybe consider your options? Do you have soil borders in the greenhouse?

                        Thanks @JWK The seedling were grown inside in feb and I put them in my well insulated greenhouse after pricking out. Unfortunately can't put them in the ground in the greenhouse as a) soil is awful and b) it's got insulation and floor boards down lol.

                        Had read all about the quad grows on here a few months back and thought I'd get a couple, mainly to aid watering whilst I'm away on hols etc- but now I am not working I don't feel like I can splurge on them (need my money to fund staying off work as long as possible lol). Luckily I am going on holiday in November instead now so watering them won't be a problem then!

                          In that case I'd say go for as big a pot as you can fit in for each plant. When you say floor boards does that allow drainage so excess water can find it's way out? Otherwise you're going to have to stand the pots in big saucers.

                          If you do have drainage then it might be worth standing those smaller pots (you already have) in growbags, it will give some extra space for the tomato roots to go searching for water.

                            If you want any of the varieties I'm growing, I'm staying at West Bay first (mid) week in June and will have spares for 99% of them.

                              Hmm... I just discovered that my first batch tom (now in 9cm pots) are growing flower branches. I think they need to be out now. I know there is still danger but ... I am going to plant them out tomorrow.
