This would be a great great advantage. But what is the theory behind it? I think the reason for rotating/soil replacing is to avoid disease building up in the soil. Why can grafting achieve the same?

@Linz I've grown Black Russian for some years, I like the flavour and the texture, Colour can be variable, they tend to be large and not a massive yield.
@blacktulip The rootstock is supposed to be disease resistant and acts as a barrier to soil borne diseases getting to the grafted on tomato.

Hi blacktulip I believe Alex is growing stock that is disease resistant so that he is not obliged to dig out and change the border soil!

Nigel This will be my first time with Black russian glad to hear that you find it fairly decent Oh Well we shall see!

@NigelJ @Tomhip Thank you very much. Where can I buy these rootstock seeds? Which ones are the best?

Cheers @Tomhip have been told latah can be a quite a mess of a plant but is better outdoors than in.

As for the Black Russian do you grow yours indoors or outdoors @NigelJ ? I can't find too much info on which is best.
Bare in mind I only have a large blowaway not a greenhouse, not sure if this going to be a factor. Lots of learning for me again this year :)

I got mine from Kings this year:
Kings Seeds - Tomato Rootstock Estamino F1

If you have an Allotment then you should be able to buy them through the NAS scheme like I did for £2.55 for 12 pelleted seeds.

In the past I've bought 50 seeds at a time from Moles:
        Tomato F1 Submarine (rootstock)

I also got the grafting clips from them too:
        Grafting Clip (plastic)
They have also started doing the silicon clips this year:
        Grafting Clip (silicone) with stake

Moles used to sell a lot more, and listed the disease resistance each had. Now they only stock two so your choice is very limited within the UK. I notice some USA sites provide a bigger choice, but in my limited experience both Arnold and Estamino have performed really well for me.

My Estamino rootstock have germinated already - taken 2 days!

Next I will sow a second batch followed by two batches of scions this weekend.

The idea of staggering the batches is to get a better chance of matching rootstock with scion stem sizes.

Will wait till March to sow my non-grafted tomatoes (these will be for outdoor growing).

I grow Latah last year, bush and very early one, also taste nice. It is on my this year list.

                I grow them outdoors.

They are very sensitive to the cold.

On the news it states that salad crops are going to be in short supply for quite a while something to do with the weather on the continent! Just shows how much we rely on imports eh! I've just sown spring onions, lettuce little gem, lettuce tom thumb and lettuce salad bowl ( we eat a lot of lettuce) also sown beetroot and radishes I have found that salad bowl and Tom Thumb are very quick growing and of course the radishes are ready in no time, this is not a panicky reaction on my part I sow these at this time every year in the greenhouse and find that it all grows splendidly (before the greenhouse gets too hot) and is ready in no time!

Put your location in your profile leeski so we know where you are to better give you advice. Also are you growing under glass? In Growbags/Pots or Soil? Is the greenhouse/bed in full sun?
