Split Sungolds do make a very tastey roasted cherry tomato sauce. But many a time after heavy rain following a dry spell, when picking outdoor Sungolds we've used 2 carrier bags and carefully separated all the split ones for sauce making, then got back home to find loads more split ones in the bag of 'eaters', juice running all over the sound tomatoes.

What did you think of Suncherry? They've been my most reliable polytunnel tomato this year. I'm still growing Sungolds but a reduced number.

I'm impressed, I've not had chance to taste them side by side of check the sugar content but I will grow them again next year. Just bought another 50p packet at the Wyevale seed sale.

                    Ditto.

Were they 'originals' as sent by Angelina', like mine, or saved from Mr McHammocklashing's tomatoes grown using Angelina's seeds?

I sowed the last 'Bulgarian' seeds JMcHL sent me some years ago this year for a comparison against my saved seeds and those tomatoes are exactly the same.

I've compared them against various other GC members images and they have all grown spherical tomatoes @JWK how have yours turned out?

@Zigs I reckon the Angelina's Bulgarian tomato you posted a pic of is a rogue shape. This does occur occasionally with tomatoes, and produces either something new and original to cultivate into a new variety, or something inferior to discard/rogue out and not save seed from.

Another possibility is cross pollination, but unlike most beefsteak tomatoes I've never known this variety to produce megablooms/fused blossoms with defective anther cones that could permit cross pollination, but insect damage to the flower can permit this to happen.

As seeds have come from the same source Angelina>Jack McHL>Me/You, I suspect it's one of the above scenarios, and unless other tomatoes from your same plant all display the usual, sperical characteristics, don't save seeds from this plant and start again with fresh seeds.

P.S. I'll be at West Bex again next Wed morning if you want one of my Bulgarian toms before I head off to West Somerset to see the Flying Scotsman (got pub B&B booked there so numerous chances to see Wed/Thur) and do some more fishing.
