Yes we are, if we still want to maintain our British identity we are now 'racists"
    Fighting a losing battle anyway.

Wanting to maintain it does not a racist make ;)
*How* we go about it ... might do?

So: I ask again - what does "British" actually mean ;)

Must admit, "M" I really do get a bit fed up with the old historical answer every time.;)
Nearly every country in the world has gone through historical changes, but they still maintain a modern identity that they are allowed to proudly say is theirs.
Brits are very good at taking on others ways, and losing their own, mostly out of a sense of "doing the right thing".
      "Musn't upset anyone".

I can only talk about my life time, I dont really give a monkeys about the Romans.

And the changes in the last twenty years have been greater than in probably a couple of hundred before that.
Change has normally been slow, now its rapid.

I love reading these threads especially as it's a Gardening Forum - they make me think.

My presumption is that "we" all have a common interest in gardening and that other than that "we" are as diverse as the general population. It's a .co.uk site which indicates British based and so probably has a high ratio of members who either live in Britain or have a British connection but why do I read so much about "us" and "them"when the discussion has nothing to do with gardening?

I often (though not always) hesitate to join in because I'm not sure that I am one of "us" and am actually one of "them".

I'm going to have to disagree with that statement: purely based on the British Empire philosophy. We invaded other nations and imposed *our* standards upon those nations without a jot of compassion, understanding or empathy for the base culture of those nations we had invaded. Admittedly, at the time, much of that was religious based, but equally, it was dominance based (such is the way of territorial war games) and even more basic, it was all down to economics/commercialism.
I do not see "Brits" as the poor relation, taking a back step (humbly Sir!) because they wished to "do the right thing".
Not quite sure which history books some people are reading  :noidea:
Nonetheless: irrespective of history books - the world evolves.

What was once great, recedes and becomes humble. What was once humble, evolves and becomes great. xxMxx 2015 :blue thumb:

            I suppose that my thoughts on immigration are influenced by a couple of things;
1] After the war my Gramp was posted to India. As such he made a lot of friends amongst the immigrants from the sub-continent when he came back so for me as I was growing up it was normal to be in the house of these people be they Hindu, Sikh, Muslim or even Roman Catholic.
2] I have also lived as an immigrant myself and come retirement I fully intend to be an immigrant again.

With a name like Westwales you must be "one of them" :heehee: :roflol: :sofa:
Seriously though, don't be shy just join in :ccheers:

Hi, WW, well, the main thrust and interest of GC covers all the aspects and areas of gardening. But that leads to an exchange of information and advice, that leads to a sense of friendship and respect, that leads to a recognition of a need to discuss and ask for opinions of Life's none gardening problems that affect us all. GC has no geographical borders, no "us and them", no narrow minded restrictions. We are UK based but we have members in many countries and their opinions, experience in gardening and Life are equally welcome and respected as any other members. Everyone has the right to give their opinion on GC, on whatever matter, so long as that opinion isn't intolerant or offensive. Yes, in some controversial threads there are heated comments of disagreements but usually members will respect each other and "agree to disagree".

I think, inevitably, if you're expressing an opinion in a discussion then there is usually an opposing opinion, and then thinking in the terms of "us" as your opinions and the opposing opinion as "them" narrows the thinking and reasoning. I find a sense of humour often tends to act as a brake on discussions becoming to intense and members losing respect for each other. So, as longk as said, don't hesitate about joining in a discussion whatever the subject as your opinion, experience is valued and welcome.:coffee::snork:

Absolutely join in!!!! I am always really interested in reading other peoples opinions/views on things, one of the things that I am most peeved about is the fact that we seem to be losing the right of free speech in this Country, if someone makes a comment which is not considered PC they are immediately accused of being a racist!!! SO wrong. I love the following quote and I think it answers your question.

"I do not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it."

Will they let you in? The criteria when you're older is usually much tougher.

Thank you for that link, very interesting, I'm not at all surprised though, there is a lot of things going on which they just conveniently omit to tell us on the news programmes.

Agreed, and some are better off these days than they would otherwise be.

And we will be forever condemned for doing so, especially by those that have benefited, ie. the people of this country.
I guess its some kind of guilt trip.
