I agree with KEF; my point too was only about T&M; have heard terrible things of wrong plants and dead plants being sent, substitutions made and complaints unanswered.

I have bought plug plants from small specialist growers and had good experiences; special things that I couldn't find locally.

Many...most...of my perennials are now over 5' tall and as much across...heleniums, sanguisorbas, persicarias and loads more ......in a little over 3 years. In that time I have had something to see from the start, (not wasted a year or two before they make anything) have increased my stock many times over by division/cuttings and from plants not usually available in GC's. :):)

I propagate most everything here.....cuttings cost nothing yet often produce plants within a season. Far, far cheaper than folks buying annuals (every year).

The cost? I compare thoroughly. Rarely pay top dollar for anything. Rarely buy any large plants. Tomorrow plants costing me £4 and £5 in 2 litre pots and postage varying from £5 to £10 according to weight will be delivered. A garden centre would charge a lot more, if they had them. Over the autumn and winter I buy perennials in 9cm pots and these are potted on to make large plants for the summer.

A well known company ...(H.....t)......sells plugs of perennials and charges the same or more than the guys I go to for 1 litre or more size specimens.

I started off buying "bargain" multi packs years ago.....most have long gone, many came to disappoint and many were not really what I wanted.

I must confess to not raising perennials from seed....I simply do not have the patience for it...wish I did! Seed for veg, for tithonias, cosmos, etc but that's it. I admire folks who do raise their plants from seed though and am slightly red-faced I don't

Dont feel nervous of buying online if there are plants you really want........:)

Here`s my pennyworth! If I find a big unusual plant in an online nursery that is impossible to find locally, it seems a jolly good idea to have it delivered to the door, looking all nice and strong and whip a dozen cuttings from it. I then have a large number of good plants which actually work out much cheaper. If that parent plant can give me a tray of 40 cuttings (which is quite usual) I can grow 20 on, and flog the other 20 to people who can`t be bothered to take cuttings.
Buying plug plants (rooted cuttings) sent in the post and a bit vulnerable seems like a totally false economy to me.
SO splashing out for a good big plant can be the safest and cheapest route, and I think the proof of the pudding is in the eating :dunno:

What sort of pudding though Tetters? Any (cornish) cream in it ? :hapfeet:

I used to sell plants and I did exactly as you outline. Usually from my own large garden plants but the number of cuttings and divisions from them made it very profitable indeed :)

Clanless. It is often difficult to attempt how to take forum comments. My reply had nothing to do with members or personalities. I merely stated my experience with T&M plus others.

Here you go - arrived in 'postiplug' format - the same as the lavender plugs from last year - this what they look like now:
