From our own numbers we can work out who is older or younger than us. :thud:

    A warning

I don't want to put a damper on this but from the number you put on this thread anyone can work out your date of birth. :rolleyespink:

If you don't want that to happen then alter your number.

I think the figure of 7 billion is truly frightening. World overpopulation is a problem that is far bigger than global warming and the world's finances. And not many people seem to be concerned. :wallbang:

I read that the third world countries such as China and India consume, per head, only 1/32nd of the resources of the richest countries. But, of course, they all aspire to equal the richest countries. If that were to happen overnight, it has been calculated that the entire world's natural resources would only last 9 more years. But before they consume the same as the West, of course, the world's population will be even bigger.

I agree Peter. It would seem that most people are more concerned with what their "special number" is. :heehee: who cares!!

I think I shall have to increase the size of my store cupboard :heehee:. I suppose we shall have to use up some of the powdered egg, dried milk and sugar that we stored during the war :loll:

Agree with you completely there Peter.
There does seem to be a deafening silence from politicians and other 'leaders' when it comes to the issue of overpopulation.
However, some influential people are trying to tackle this issue:

I have to disagree with some of the stuff in that link, especially the bit that blames poor people in developing countries, from my own recollection, rich people in developing countries can and do have large families too, and I'd imagine they have a much bigger carbon foot print than a poor family that consumes less.

            Just a thought. :)

That was the best speach on the population problem i've ever seen.

@ Bimble, I disagree. i don't think Sir David was trying to lay solely on developing countries, he was using the example of planning education to emphasise the difference in birth rates, but his main go was at the Catholic Countries, too right. Now they are not developing countries.

Hope they followed up the conference with a screening of Soylent Green.

            Why, me of course:D

            I must disagree.

We will reach the point where this becomes the truth, but not for a long time yet.

However, to make your sentence true we only need to make one minor modification:

"Too many greedy people... not enough food".

I'm not going to climb onto my soap box because I'm as guilty as anyone. But we waste too much. Those of us that are not totally poverty stricken (ie those of us that can easily afford food and everything else we need) do tend to waste so much. Maybe not individually, but certainly collectively.

While half the world is starving to death, the other half the world is throwing away enough good food each year to feed the starving half.

Clueless - whilst you have a good point about waste - I believe that you are missing the point.

Even if everyone in the West only ate half as much (not a bad thing) that saving would soon be eaten up (no pun intended) by the relentless exponential rise in world population.

In theory, the problem could be self correcting. But, like the financial mess and global warming, for the theory to work there has to be political leadership, and in practice that tends to be missing. Oh! - and don't for one minute believe that the recent agreement has solved the financial problem.

The rising world population is the elephant in the room (no pun intended Trunky ! ). The worlds goverments hardly ever mention it as population control is not a vote winner . Also as mentioned , after this latest world financial fiasco , has anyone any confidence that planet Earth could even look at the problem never mind put any control measures into action .
