i do put a heat lamp in my shed during the winter but only because i have Hecks Grassfinches which are kinda delicate & not as hardy as the other species i keep...but if i didn't have them i wouldn't need to (indeed before i got them i didn't) as all the other species i have (Budgies, Zebra finches, Bengalese Finches, Diamond Doves & Chinese Painted Quail) are all hardy little fella's & as long as they're in out of the elements in a sheltered draft free place then they don't require any additional heat

the Canary with the Beatles haircut are called "Gloster" Canaries (most likely what your neighbour had Spruce ) & they would be my first choice were i to get canaries myself...oddly enough i've never had them! no real reason, it just...didn't happen :dunno:

@honeybunny the canary was called topper it did look like a "beetle haircut" can't remember that one singing though, the wife was Italian and I know the others they had would be put up on the wall of the house in the summer during a warm sunny day and would sing their little hearts out.

Can you keep a canary with the rest of your birds ?

I will keep a eye on this thread

their song is amazing! so beautiful & kinda captivating to listen too :imphrt:

i wouldn't imagine i'd have any problems keeping Canaries with my lot as i know many people do keep them in mixed aviaries. you have to be careful with budgies though when your keeping them with other species as they can be quite wicked little things when the mood takes them...especially the hens! i keep my little flock busy with lots to take there mind of getting into mischief so i never really have any bullying or anything like that *touch wood*

Reading and seeing these posts bring back some happy memories for me,as some years ago I had an aviary ,I had both budgies and canaries and also zebra's.I used to show them at local shows. You had to ring them for showing so that every one could tell there age ,you can just imagine what a job it was to ring them ,the budgies where not too bad but the zebra's where tough to do as they are so small ,great care had to be taken not to harm them.

I too once had an Aviary very much like yours, with Budgies (including a few Lutinos), Zebs and others I forget now. Was nice to hear them chirping away all day:) One day....

Yes it was lovely to hear them chatter away as it was to listen to the canaries in full breading song. The people who lived next door where very upset when I let them go,she said it was so quiet without them.

we're very lucky with the neighbours, both neighbours are also animal lovers, thank goodness for that:phew: although one (the 'new' one) has about a million cats which are a nuisance trying to sneak into the garden after my birdies all the time :nonofinger: thankfully Snoop one of our little dogs is only too happy to chase them back out again:doggieshmooze:
