It takes seeing pics like this to make me realise how lucky I am to live in such a wonderful county! I have to say, I'm not sure I remember so many sunny days in Yorkshire this summer lol.

We are hoping to head out over the mors this week, so keep your fingers crossed for a fine day on Thursday please!

Doubt I'll take any pics to match these though. My photography skills are worse than my computer skills lol

    The Minster fire....
It is a strange fact that my father died on that day. And never being a religious man It is said amonst family members that he was in some way responably for it:(
    Spooky stuff you might say.

    Another Grand Day Out
Grand sunny day in Yorkshire today.
So plans were set this morning for a grand day out.
A return visit to the minster to capture some images I missed on my last visit and to pick up my Minster card which will allow me free entry at any time.

The sun was shining through the stain glass windows and painting colours on the stonework. Delightful to see..

The ceiling of the Chapter House. This picture taken from the very centre tile in the room looking up
    [IMG]

I spotted a shaft of sunlight highlighting this scene.. I like this a lot
    [IMG]

After the Minster it was time for a picnic in the Museum gardens and to admire the old ruins and buildings
    [IMG]

Followed by a good long walk along the Roman walls
    [IMG]

To finish at the continental market before heading for home.

    Today was the day..
Dawn came blazing through this morning with the promise of another bonus day and the chance of another Grand Day Out.
With picnic prepared and extra coats in the car it was off to Yorkshire Waters Fewston reservoir.
A really nice area with miles of easy going walks.
Please join me and Mrs R on our autumn walkabout today.
On the way this painting was spotted on the side of a building.
    Very amusing..

These wind turbines were spotted against the wonderful autumn sun.

First stop was the car park at Fewston, with plenty of facilities for the visitor. The all important toilet is located here!

Miles and miles of forest to investigate, which seemed to be full of very friendly Robins today.

The reservoir is full to capacity with plenty of compensation flow.

    After crossing the dam.

We followed this path along the edge on the reservoir. Easy going and on the level most of the time with wonderful views.

A vista looking the length of Fewston
    [IMG]

The view looking downstream from the top of the berm.

We continued along the path until returning to the car park
    [IMG]

On the way home we called into Darley mill for a small shopping expedition, In fact it was so small we came away with nothing!

Final picture is the old high level channel that used to feed water to the water wheel that used to drive the mills that ground the grain,, etc. etc.

Thats it for todays grand day out. I hope you enjoyed your visit to but a small section of our wonderful county that is Yorkshire.
    Robert

Todays Grand Day Out was a busy one.
Into York to the Museum Gardens to check in with the York astronomer for a look at the York observatory and to see what a "star gun" is all about.
This first picture is Norman the astronomer showing us the working of the Star Gun.

The idea is in a dark sky when you can see the stars you point this gun at the star you are interested in pull the trigger and the electronics do the rest.
The display now shows detail of the star/ constellation that you are pointing at.

Best thing is this gizmo works just as well in daylight with a solid cloud cover like we had today!

Norman then consulted his tables to tell us many more details about the star we were looking at through the clouds....clever,
    [IMG]

The next part of out visit was 4.5 inch the old observatory. This was built way back in 1830s and today houses a 4.5 inch equatorial telescope built by Thomas Cook in 1850.

This instrument was fully refurbished a number of years ago and is still in use to the general public on a regular basis
    [IMG]

The scopes equatorial control is achieved by a clockwork mechanism (No PC in site) and works as silently as it did when it was first made.

Off to the Minster to get a look at the VERY large print on fabric that was mounted yesterday in front of the east window which we will not see again for 10 years! due to restoration work. As it was a very dull day with no sun the picture is not as bright as I would like it. It is made up from 800 photos that were taken before restoration started.

Every time I visit the Minster the light is of a different quality.
I came up with this picture today
    [IMG]

After the minster a short walk to the Railway Museum to check in with one or two of the old timers
    [IMG]

After that lot I was happily shattered and headed to home for tea and post this up. Back to York tomorrow. The central library are having a sale and you can pick up a mountain of books for few pounds. I know I did during the summer.
Hope you enjoyed sharing my grand day out. Please come back some time for some more.
    Robert

Seems the Star gun uses GPS technology plus it must have an inclination detector of some sort as well. All that for about £200!

It sure is tough this retirement lark
I will have you know I was up at 09:30 this morning......
Bread baking to do, which turned out very nice today.
Time this afternoon for a grand trip out.
Not exactly a grand day out but worth a trip to Castle Howard to see the autumn colours of the trees.
It was quite amazing as I hope you will agree by doing me the pleasure of looking at a few photos I took.
This first picture is the front drive to Castle Howard.
