Not a grand day out as such, but a visit to York Minster was called for on this wonderful winter day. The sun was at its best and produced some amazing photo opputunities.
It was one of those rare days when the bells were rung for a full six hours. A most amazing noise as I stood at the base of the west face.
Enjoy these few pictures with me.

Lovely photos Robert.Mr Kandy keep saying he will take me up to York to see the Railway Museum but as yet havn't got there.Went to the Minster about 25 years ago on a train trip and bought a Minute for £1 which goes towards the upkeep of it.I think my name went into a book when myself, Mr Kandy and the party we were with all paid £1.

Can't remember a lot about the inside apart from the very large stained glass window like the one in your photos.I love the way you have picked out the colours on the arches from the glass when the sun shone through it.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane:)

Its sad to say that entrance costs into the Minster appears to be a little prohibitive to some people. Depends on the party size and type of tour.
I have seen a few couples turn away after seeing the charges.
Being local I have a Minster card which gets me free entry to ground floor area only, I have to pay extrra if I wish to do the roof or the basement.
You may well ask why pay to go to church? but the fact is the great east window is costing about 20million to repair and will not be seen for the next ten years.
That is why the largest print job in the world has been placed in front of it while the work is carried out. Not quite the same without the sun shining through it but it is a very good likeness.

Hi Robert,How long have they been charging an entrance fee to get inside the Minster?I am sure that we never had to pay all those years ago and only had to buy the minute for the upkeep and that was voluntary.I will have to Google to see how much the charges are now.

Tis true if you are in York on a family day a visit inside the Minster will have to be programmed into your costs for the day.
Having said that I was there on Saturday and there was quite lengthy lines of folk waiting to get in..
Luckily I have free access to ground floor only.
Without that my visits would be far and few between.
A few years ago I was in the Minster setting some stuff up for the Company I worked for then and the organ started playing Toccata and fugue in D minor.. well... that was me.. I was high, the most amazing noise ever.
Not only my favorite organ piece, but to stand front of instrument and hear an inpromtu like that just blew me away...
The boss and I just stood there.. gobstruck....

Partly a grand day out today, but not the full day.
On the bus first thing to visit the National Railway Museum (NRM) to see the newely built steam engine.
The Peppercorn class A1 Steam Locomotive Trustâ??s brand new £3million locomotive, Tornado And she looked magnificent in the new paint job and I was lucky enough to be there early before the crowds spoiled any pictures.
The last picture in the group is Mallard as we know is the fastest steam engine in the world. Alongside the Mallard is the Rocket (the first)
with the Tornado (the newest) to the rear on Mallard. A splendid site to see.
enjoy my pictures please. We start with what I consider my best one and my favorite.

Brings back memories Robert, I went from Kings Cross to Edinburgh on the Silver Link (think it was an A4) about '62. Haven't been to the museum for 15 years or more, I have relatives in York so next time i'm up I might have another look.:)
    Excellent pics.:gnthb:
