I can remember years ago Geoff Hamilton saying sprinkle salt along beetroot rows.
I've never tried it, but its apparently a coastal plant from N. Africa, as I remember, and grows in salt air.

Actually, Dai, it's not something I have come across in the "OLD BOOKS", probably because I have always skipped over anything mentioning Beetroot!!!!!! But I have a few books printed between 1732 and 1896 describing the way they grew things on the Big House estates penned by the Head Gardeners, Estate Managers and the Ruling Class of the day, so I'll have a wander through them, with a glass of red wine, to see if there is any mention of putting salt into drills of any plants when sowing.

I think a lot of people are put off by the "conventional" way beetroot is often presented, especially doused in vinegar (although I love it).

Instead Dai, try it grated raw with chopped orange as a salad. Tastes completely different.

Beet & Celery are both descended from Seashore plants & still grow wild there.

There were 2 cannisters in the shed, one marked Sodium Chloride, the other Sodium Chlorate.... Oh bother:DOH:

I've got one of Peter Seabrookes gardening books that I bought in the 1980's when we first started allotmenteering and he said the same thing about salt so I gave it a go and it did make the beetroot a much brighter colour but don't know about improving the taste as I can't stand the stuff as I was forced to eat it at school dinners and it put me off for life.

The variety we always grew in theose days was Bolthardy but I don't know whether it was the variety it's self that taste ok but Mr K nevr complained. These days though he preferes his beetroot cooked and eaten straight away with just the odd jar pickled for xmas :)

Now if we had a tips page, perhaps month by month or some such format...little gems like this would not get "buried" in old/achived forum threads.

      Steve...:)

That's a great idea Steve. :dbgrtmb: Perhaps it could be incorporated with 'old medicinal remedies' too. I used one just a couple of hours ago.
