      We do agree occasionally on gardening matters.:thumbsup:

      I dont know much about Winnie Mandela, but I do know she was/is not a nice person.
      Even poor old Nelson worked that out in the end.

      So the way I see it, she is actually the butt of the Maggie joke.
      Nothing racist, (unless you want to make it that), because if she was white she would still have not been nice person.:)

                I never met Winnie or Thatch, but of the two of them Winnie was clearly the nicer human being!!!!!!!

                The only thing puzzling about the inoffensive joke is who did Thatch do the ironing for?

                I'm only a mod on here. I don't make all the decisions or policies, but I do get the honour of trying to keep the forums clean and legal.

                I guess we all have our own sensitivities about certain things. I have often offended people inadvertently by possibly giving an opinion or advice which didn't go down well.

                Humour can be wry, cynical, ironic, and just plain nonsensical, but it is usually taking advantage and ridiculing some facet of culture, race, habit, appearance etc. Some jokes appeal to all people but a lot do not......and I think it is understandable if some people take offence or get irritated by the subject.

                I think people who take offence at a joke at, say, a particular culture or race, have to think as to whether or not the joke is meant to be offensive. Our British culture is one where we are always laughing at ourselves, our misfortunes and definitely others!!! So over the centuries we've been telling jokes about the Welsh [Hi Dai:heehee:], Scots [Hi, Jack:heehee:}, Irish, Yorkshire people, etc, etc, with each of those telling jokes about the others. But those jokes are told not in hate or prejudice, but in humour that is not malicious. Being a butt of a joke can be embarrassing, hard, and irritating......I know, I've been there!! But you have to take a deep breath and try to turn the tables...........in a humorous way.

                I don't always agree with what goes on this particular Forum, but it is here for controversial, outrageous, rude subjects to be aired. I think that anyone who enters this Forum should bear that in mind, take a deep breath, have an open mind and bring their sense of humour. They should always remember too, that we Moderators are checking for anything that oversteps the line too much, but that is what this Forum does........it oversteps the line.
