Thats a lot better Melinda, well done.

My carrots are coming out like that too, they were seeds from the BBCs dig thingy. Can't moan if they were free though.

    Yes, its a strange year.
My peas are also a failure.
Runner beans are poor but are still coming.
Tomatoes (outside) are only just coming on song.
Potato bags were better then last years.
Best crop again is the onions (Sturons)
Oh well....theres always next season to look forward to.

Its been a successful start to the autumn.

Still picking lots of apples, beans .
Most of my tomatoes are still green.
Picked the fattest beans and cucumbers last night. Its been raining, and Ive been busy so Ive not been at all attentive.

My only real issue are my butternut squashes- they are still weeny and a few have started to rot (they are way off the ground).

We've four different fruit trees in big pots we bought at the end of last year, the only one to produce any fruit was the Braburn apple, it started with five and we lost two in the high winds earlier in the year and we ended up with two!

We've been more successful with our little almond tree we bought three years ago which is a feature in the centre of our garden, we bought it for the attractive leaves and blossom. We didn't think about the fruit, but it produced about eight almonds in its first year, about sixty or so last year and I've just harvested this year's crop. So not too bad.

Nice toms Melinda. My nutterbutt squash has only set 1 at home, only 8" long, yet the plant down a the West Bay plot is covered in them, over a foot long.

You'll be making your own marzipan then Dog House.

Only ripened thanks to a manky banana and a plastic Fortnums' carrier bag!

Whoo @ your almonds Doghouse! My first time seeing them in their natural state.

The half open ones put me in mind of the man eating plant from the Little Shop of Horrors! :D

    Feed ME!

I've no experience of growing almonds, I just assume that when they open as they have, it's time to pick them. If I let them fall as I did the first two or three last year, the squirrels pinch them. It's quite easy to remove the outer shell when they're in this state, which I now have and they're drying out in a basket on the windowsill.

Excellent haul of tomatoes Melinda, I bet you are pleased with them.

Interesting almonds, Doghouse, can't say I've ever seen any growing naturally in this country - do they taste good?

Well, last year's tasted OK, but they were rather small and thin. This year's crop seems a bit bigger, but I think I need to let them dry out a bit before trying one. Maybe it will take a few years before they reach the size of those in Waitrose, or maybe they never will. I'll have to just wait and see. But either way, we enjoy the tree, so I guess it doesn't really matter.
