Then they can be put up for auction Ziggy ;) . I could do with a couple of months on a warm, silver sand beach in the tropics.
Then I can come back around in mid April and start sowing 2014 Tomato seeds . I'm not having lanky giants sprawling all over the bedroom like last year - sapping up precious oxygen...:gaah: .

I'm happy to divide my share with GC members on my Tomato Seed swap list - if they want to grow them.

Mainly because they didn't seem to like the heat, try them Freddy and draw your own conclusions. :)

Jenny please don't release any seed until the expiry date is up on the present distribution time. Our reasons are laid out in the original post. :)

So you got wind of this before it was released, I'm asking no questions! :)

            Hiya Sheal.

Didn't seem to like the heat? Did they wilt or something? I note you said they were bland. I found this year that compared to those grown under glass, my outdoor ones were bland. I would try some myself, but I don't know what situation I'll be in come sowing/planting time next year. The new house does have a greenhouse, but only a small one.

            Cheers...Freddy

Freddy, can I refer you to post #7 please. :) They did have a tendency to show slight wilt too, I found them thirstier than other toms. As the norm I don't grow tomatoes outside because of the unpredictable weather here, this year was an exception being warmer than usual although only 'Manx Marvel' was outside.

                Hiya Sheal:)

Yes, I noticed that. I wondered if it was a reaction to being moved or some other factor?:dunno:

                When I said...
...I meant you as a group, as you indicated it was a general consensus . I'm guessing others had similar problems?

                Cheers...Freddy

Freddy, mine have been in and out of shelter because of temperature highs and lows and moved to various places in the garden, I grew them in pots. The only thing they didn't like was a complete lack of sun, but even then coped with a couple of hours a day. To a certain degree they are tougher than other toms. The moving about didn't seem to bother them in or outside. What I don't know is, whether they are susceptible to blight. Taking into account when they were first grown they probably are, but I've been lucky here and not suffered blight issues in all the years I've been growing tomatoes. :)

I think it was a general consensus but you really need to ask the other members when they are available. They seem to have deserted me for the time being! :heehee:

                      Hiya Sheal:)

Yes, that was my point. I didn't want you to think I'd singled you out:blue thumb: It would have been interesting if someone had grown them indoors and outdoors to compare, but I appreciate that you (the group) wanted to isolate them. Maybe next year it might be worth someone persisting with them under cover. I'd be up for it, if I was staying here....

                      I wish I could say the same:doh:

Reading between the lines, I suspect it was developed as a strain that could produce a crop in the middle of the Irish Sea at a time when very few people had greenhouses.

Built for hardyness and doesn't like being molycoddled.

                              Hi folks,

I can give you my experience on growing Manx Marvel this year. I grew them inside and outside :)

I was the last of our secret squirrel gang to start them off, sowing on 24th April. I had three seeds and only two germinated. These two grew very quickly, and I kept them in the greenhouse all the time. I started picking ripe fruit off them on 31st August (they actually beat some of my other varieties to ripen even though those had been sown 6 weeks earlier!)

We were not really sure of its growth habit, so the two main plants in my greenhouse I treated one as a cordon the other as a bush. Although they grew quickly the greenhouse plants never looked that happy compared with my other varieties. So maybe they don't like the indoor heat. They still produced respectable yields. The Cordon plant was the best, it had a few more fruit and on average they were bigger by some 25%. So between us we are certain that Manx Marvel should be treated as a Cordon.

The cordon plant's sideshoots I grew on and planted seven of them outdoors on 26th July. These outdoor plants grew even faster and bigger than the inside ones. They were much better in terms of yield and plant size compared to my other outdoor varieties (Ferline and Rosada which I'd started off much earlier).

Sadly my outdoor Manx Marvel's were wiped out by Blight in September. That was a shame as they were heavily laden with fruit at that point and none had ripened. I still managed to salvage 5.5kg of green fruit off them before I had to destroy the plants to stop Blight spreading. Given a bit of space and an earlier start then I reckon Manx Marvel will be a very heavy cropper outdoors.
