Lovely picture Rich - I've heard that Kingfishers are birds you can set your watch by. Apparently they turn up at the same place same time each day. I live near the marshes but haven't seen one - just herons and the occasional tawny owl.

Thanks guys. He's been back for brief visits occasionally.

If you want to see them in abundance go to the River Barrow in Ireland. We hired a narrowboat for a week starting at Graigmanagh in 2004. We only saw 3 other boats during that week, but loads of kingfishers, one even perched on the end of my fishing rod. I moved very slowly to pick up my camera, but he saw me.

    Hi Rich
just came across your kingfisher pic (eyes have gone deeeeeep green). I can sometimes find up to 10 Little Egrets(which were once a rarety in uk) almost on my doorstep but not a Kingfisher, you're a lucky person to see one in your garden.

I work opposite the Oare Marshes on the north Kent coast which is an RSPB reserve. We have resident kingfishers there and occasionally see little egrets too. I even surprised a weasle with a blackbird in his mouth once.

Madrat, you may not have seen many wrens, but I bet you've heard plenty. Ounce for ounce they must be one of the noisiest birds around.

On the RSPB web site you can listen to the different songs the birds sing. I stumbled across this when we did the garden bird survey recently with the kiddies.

Here in Deepest Wales we have Red Kites and lots of them. I was driving my car last week towards Rhayader and I stopped for about an hour to watch these lovley birds. They completly dwarf the Buzzard with their size. There is feeding/ viewing area on route Rhayader to Aberystwyth [forgot the road number],and you can see them really close. Camera? at home.

I love to see the birds in the garden.
I saw a woodpecker a few weeks ago and then a bird I have no idea what it was. Maybe someone could tell me.
It was about the size of a wood pigeon. Light brown with white spots on it's chest and back.It had a small hooked beak and big yellow eyes. I was watching it through the binoculars I keep in the kichen . It was sitting on the fence for ages. I went to get my camera but when I returned it had gone.
Whatever it was the other birds didn't like it and it was cause a panick with them. Thats why I looked the noise was terrible.
