Acer palmatum Atropurpureum - Scorched leaves

    Personally I prefer to see japanese maples given a bit of light, dappled shade and away from too much direct sunlight.

    On that point, would it be fair to say that red-leaved acers prefer sun and green-leaved prefer shade ? Cheers...freddy.

    Red leafed maples will tend to turn green in the shade .... you can see this very noticeably with leaves on a red leafed variety which is in sunlight ... the leaves underneath will be greener than those in the sunlight itself
    Mind you ... The amount of sunlight we have been getting here this past summer would hardly count as sunlight at all :)
    I can't remember a worse 3 months of lousy weather .......

    just to add my thanks for the info in this, have a small acer(roughly a foot) that was planted out in a bed, but wasn't doing too well so i moved it to a container and moved it somewhere more sheltered and hopefully it willl recover...

    Hi All
    I bought 2 Acer at the start of what passed for the summer ,and i was not aware they dont like wind, sad to report both have now gone to the big forest in the sky, :oops:
