Hi folks, As said on the heading of the thread I am going to make a raised bed for veg in my new back garden. I have never made one before and am fairly new to gardening so i could use some help. Which materials should i use which are cost effective and going to last maybe 5 years the dimensions i want would be 6ft by 4ft.

The raised beds I made in my previous garden were from decking planks. They were still going strong after four years, but, then I moved :heehee:
    Others have used gavel boards.
    Posh folk build brick ones.
Some people have even experimented with straw bales :dunno:

Crikey, hope there are no wolves around ... starting to sound a bit like: "I'll huff and I'll puff and I'll *blow* that raised bed down" :heehee:

Scaffold boards are good, but if they are in your garden and funds allow maybe sleepers.

You do not say where you live, a good bet is used scaffolding boards
You may find them locally, or definitely if you Fleabay it

Or contact a local scaffolding business and ask if they have any old boards (they are not allowed to use them if they have a split, or deep cut)

I got a load of used scaffold boards off ebay, it's by far the cheapest solution and they look reasonable too. But for one 6X4 bed then a couple of Wickes scaffold boards at around £15 each is not too expensive. You might get them cheaper from a Builder's Merchant.

You can get new landscaping sleepers 8ft 200x100 for about £12 each shopping around, they make lovely raised beds.

I am from Belfast, Northern Ireland. My back yard really only gets sun from early afternoon right through till sunset which i cant really complain. I got a quote for scaffolding boards at 13' for £8.75 each which is not bad i think.

Yes, I will get some pics up of my garden at the minute and some of after aswell. We have just moved in and the place is infested with weeds. The house has been empty for a while as the previous occupant passed away some years ago so the garden has been reclaimed by nature which i don't mind because now i know stuff can grow there lol.
