@BeeHappy it will take that long for all my other shrubs, climbers etc to beef out. I'm not going to be able to do the whole garden this summer so it might be that long before I have a spot available for it. This is all new to me so I have to experiment. I have all sorts of projects on the go. So far most are looking promising. Once I've mastered the basics I can become more creative.

@Jack Sparrow yes we are all on a "constant" learning curve  ...thats what makes gardening sooo interesting ....never a dull moment in the life of those who garden eh :heehee:
I hope i haven't offended you with my comment  it was only to point out that there could be an alternative path for each of us to take when choosing plants and was no way intended as you needing to explain your choices  Enjoy your garden Jack your hard work is paying off :dbgrtmb:

Depends on your variety but agapanthus take from 2 - 4 years to flower first time.. I have the very tall blue ones can't remember the name now and they took 4yrs before they flowered from bulblets but beautiful blooms every year now.. If in pots keep potting on when roots have really crammed the pot.. They eventually like deep roots but confined..

How do you know when the roots have filled the pot?

So is it best to put the bulbs in smaller individual pots until they outgrow them and then move them to a big pot?

Thanks everybody. I will definitely be buying some, just a little disappointed that it could take a while before I see any flowers.

I would never buy bare agapanthus roots. Best to buy potted plants, ideally in flower if you want to know the colour.
Roots will take a few years to produce flowering plants; time is precious so get your agapanthus for now and this year. Bought from a nursery instead of from a garden centre they are not too expensive :)

I agree but I think that (in all but the milder areas of the country) that the evergreen species are best grown in pots so that they can be moved to a protected area for the winter if needs be. I do find the evergreen varieties easier to bloom.

Ah but, buying plants is easy. The fun/skill is to raise them from nothing to booming. I buy few plants, most come from seed, but I do like the bargain bins and Poundland (and any of the other bucket shops) cos you are more or ess bringing them back from the dead!

Check the drain holes. I repotted a rare Astroemeria today - should have took a photo of the drainage holes

I've never grown them in pots, only in the ground.;)
But most of mine have now been overgrown by other plants, full sun is required for good flowering I find, So mine dont flower as well as they used to.

Only ever bothered with the hardier deciduous ones, got too many tender pot plants to worry about Agapanthus in pots, when they grow well enough in the garden.

If mine come to anything I have a spot in the garden for them. If they don't make it there, I might consider a potted display on my patio. There are always options.

YEP Longk  do agree with the above statement as im know as the mad seedaholic and will make a BEEline for the near-death stand at the bargain bucket shops - got a sweet little Salvia cost me 20p and two Hellebores for the grand total of 60p that have been in the cossett-bay all over Christmas :fingers crossed: they will make good plants for next year ...but they certainly wont break the bank:heehee: ....But i do think there are times when if you see a wonderful well-nurtured plant that is on sale that you covert ... then GO for it as thats how we can show our appreciation for the fabulous plants that some specialist and general Nursery plantsmen and women produce :love30:
BTW Thanks for the heads up re the evergreen Agapanthus good info to know for the future

Compromise......buy a potted plant AND bare roots. Enjoy the potted plant this year, and next and the next; get the satisfaction of growing roots for plants in 4 or 5 years. Of course, often with bare roots, they are not named varieties so the flower colour may not be as expected:noidea:
