I have a couple of friends who, as part of their jobs, are not allowed certain smart devices at home, such as Alexa and smart doorbells. It's something to do with them having signed the Official Secrets Act :noidea: .

A very select few may be prohibited due to their jobs but even i signed the osa and it doesn't prevent ownership of smart devices.

I have the Amazon echo dot. We use it for checking weather mainly and the kids really enjoy asking in the countdown to Christmas :heehee:

They're very very versatile tools and can control your entire home but naturally you have to have all the techy connected devices. My brother in law has automated his house to a ridiculous level, I'm more analogue

If you have a mobile phone or modern TV then they also 'listen' as much as Alexa.
Personally, I'm not interesting enough to worry about whatever dark machine people seem to be concerned about are recording.

I wouldn't bother with one, they don't do anything useful.

Everything that could listen has been disabled, and people are complaining why I have never on my phone :)
I do have it on now and then.

I also have a smart TV (nothing else was available) but have switched off the smart bits - I think :th scifD36:

It does, every so often, ask me if I know the camera is switched off so I can't use hand signals (I can but I don't think it's referring to the hand signals I might make ) and that I can't give it voice commands. :heehee:

Our smart tv is about 8 years old so maybe it's not as smart as it likes to think:heehee:

Our tv (21”) is at least 20 years old and suffering from the diseases of old age. We never turn it on.

My ipad has a camera lens facing away from the user and another facing toward the user. I have covered the latter with a sticky label. I don’t kid myself that this is of much use in providing privacy and I am pretty sure that if it wanted to it could listen in on conversations. Also, every word we type on here is probably ringing bells in some dark corner of the computerverse.

20+ years ago I was in the Navy and had a chat with a WEO. He'd been on a training course where he was told to turn his phone off and place it on the desk and the conversation etc carried on. He was then escorted to the next office where they showed how his 'off' phone actually wasn't and that everything on the PC had been accessed through his phone.
Don;t know how but if 'they' want to see what you're up to then you're not going to stop them.
The WEO said it terrified him.

OH has an Alexa in his "office"/man-cave. I refuse to have one anywhere else in the house. He occasionally uses it to listen to music. It definitely listens in even when it's not being used - he often finds "recommendations" in his Amazon account that he hasn't actually searched for but tenuously related to something we've talked about in that room.

I remember being invited into somebody’s house once when we were carol singing in the village. The owner told us not to stand out in the rain but to come inside and sing in the hall. There was an Alexa bug in the hall and I remember wondering what it would make of the shepherds abiding in the fields. And then I remembered this and couldn’t stop giggling. Probably everyone else thought I’d had too much Christmas cheer.

I don't have either! :) Which may be over-cautious given I live alone so there would be precious little for them to record. The occasion expletive when I stub a toe perhaps.
