Your father in laws savings will be eaten up. But the last £16,000 is safe. Yes the government will take every penny above this 16K threshold but they cannot take the last 16K.

EDIT. My figures above are out of date. Please see below for up to date ones..
    Residential Care means test
If you’re moving into a care home and have more than £23,250 in savings or assets (or £23,750 in Wales and £25,250 in Scotland), you’ll usually have to pay all of the care-home fees. This threshold includes your property unless your partner or another dependant still lives there.

Best wishes with his and your endeavors !

I think what is very clear is that none of us has the full picture and on that basis are not in a position to make a judgement.

In general I believe that we should try to look after our vulnerable members of society but without the full facts how do we know who has the greatest need? We certainly can't meet everyone's wants but we should try to meet their needs. I think there are people (have been in my own family) who need 24hr care and I would propose that even one live-in carer can't provide that and as such those people may well be better off in a care home.

However, I think the arguement in this case was the envisaged psychological damage a move would cause. Certainly statistics do support the idea that many elderly people die soon after a move but that could be because it was made at the wrong time (ie usually too late).

It is an emotive issue, the council seems to have followed its own criteria and therefore sees itself as being fair to everyone, including others who have accepted decisions they haven't liked. The ombudsman was referred to and supported the council. I'm interested that the council also said they can defer payments so that Mr Clarke doesn't lose his home but what isn't clear is whether that is for the actual care home fee part or the top-up cost of staying at home. As a society we tend to criticise elderly wealthy people receiving non-means tested benefits etc but then we don't like means testing. Would it be right for us to pay everything, deny other people whatever cost the council has accepted and then for the family to inherit assets? I don't know. How can we possibly make a judgement?

Sorry to read about your friend.

Just to clarify one thing: the son runs an "Executive Coaching" business - not a coach/transport (executive, luxury or otherwise) business.
"Executive Coaching" is a holistic approach, a sort of middle ground/cross over between counselling and therapy, for executives in business which focusses on concepts such as goal setting, business ethics, work life balance etc, etc. with a view to enhance the individuals performance for the good of the company (often, but not always, paid for on the company account). This service can range in price (obviously) but:
      You make a good point.

However, the OP provided a link which contains information regarding a particular instance which we are expressing our opinion on - an opinion doesn't, necessarily, equate to a judgement.
By taking their family situation to a newspaper and having it published, naturally people will have thoughts and opinions on the matter.
Some posters may have skim read the article, others may have read the full article, and yet others may not have read the article and all will have formed an opinion accordingly.
Nonetheless, the article does contain certain facts which, simply through publication, leave them open to comment and scrutiny. Indeed, by those facts published, one can delve a little deeper and form an opinion based on those discoveries :)

Mind you, the whole article is filled with emotive language designed to provoke opinion!
      It has succeeded ;)

Not me, some of those elderly wealthy people will have worked bloody hard for the money/assets which they have, they will also have contributed all their working lives to our PAYE system I don't think they should be expected to give any of this away. Don't agree with the "Robin Hood" way.

Makes me angry as well kandy, but nobody seems to object to this?????

Why do I find myself wishing you had said this line in a certain " other" thread? :heehee::whistle:

Val... I was teasing you - a play on words, to lighten the mood: hence the winky smiley. Backed it up with my next "disclaimer" post ... just to make you chuckle.
Sorry my humour didn't, quite, translate across the posts.
No wrong way taken on my behalf :spinning:
