Just back from collecting 2 more hedgehogs from the RSPCA. The 2 we had last year we did catch on the trail camera a couple of times and they do leave their droppings in various places. Good to be able to help relocate the next 2 hedgehogs. Will we ever see youngsters?

We have had 4 this week, two adults and two young, no trail camera but a phone pic through the conservatory window at 10pm was all I could manage so I had to lighten it a bit.

Brought the trail camera card in yesterday which had been set up to show the boxes that the hedgehogs were in. NOTHING!!!! Can't understand how the camera didn't pick them up when they left. We know that there is a short time lapse before the camera starts but the hogs must have been really quick. However what we did pick up were the foxes which were very nervous around the area. We had been given cat food by the RSPCA to put out for a few days for the hogs. Yes you know the story. The cats (3 different ones and we don't have cats) all came to the feast. We think that the foxes could smell the cats and this was making them nervous.
Just hope that the hogs have found somewhere to go and find food.

Just a reminder that if you ( or anyone you know ) are planning a bonfire for Guy Fawkes celebrations, please please either build the bonfire at the last minute or check thoroughly for hedgehogs and any other creatures before lighting.
My local rescue has posted photos of some hedgehogs that have been burnt already, and while the photos aren't too gory I've decided just to stick to posting this instead. Bonfire-night-hedgehog-safety_1024x1024.jpg

                  Hi
I saw a item on the local news saying don’t leave pumpkins out to rot unless in a compost bit as if eaten by hedgehogs it can make them really ill

                  First time I heard this

I first heard this a couple of years ago @Spruce, and contacted my local BBC station who were doing an item about pumpkin carving. The presenter emailed me to say she'd never heard of this, but when the item was repeated on the evening programme they did put out a warning about the danger to hedgehogs.

There was a bit of a mixed response from various hedgehog rescues around the country as some seemed to think that hedgehogs wouldn't eat pumpkins anyway, but the most up to date thinking is that it's not worth taking the risk of leaving pumpkins on the ground.

This post is from my local rescue. The "killing with kindness" post they refer to concerned a hedgehog that someone had taken in and attempted to help, but unfortunately a lot of things that affect hedgehogs are internal. It was finally brought to the Rescue, but is in a bad way.
Unfortunately I'm unable to post it as I am not on Facebook and can only scroll down so far, but that was the gist of it.

"A little lady was brought in today after being found out in the day yesterday.
She had been out in the day because she had high levels of lungworm and roundworm in her body which meant she was severely dehydrated and severely underweight so her chances were poor.
But before coming to us she had been covered with a powder because she had fleas. Both her nose and mouth had thick hardened powder and her breathing was not good. Sadly she has died this afternoon.
As a rescue we work to the most up to date research and medication protocols, a large percentage of the medication and treatments we use are vet prescribed.
Sadly the internet although has some correct information it also has a lot of out of date information. There are treatments for domestic pets that are toxic to hedgehogs so please if you find one that needs help get it to a rescue urgently and never try to treat yourself.
We posted about “Killing with Kindness” yesterday where people think they’re doing the right thing for the hedgehog but don’t have the knowledge, experience or medication to treat the hedgehog correctly. The best thing anyone can do is to call a rescue and get the hedgehog to them ASAP."

If any forum members come across this situation where a friend or neighbour is looking after a poorly hedgehog thinking they are doing the right thing, please can I ask you to remember this post. Many thanks .
