"Sing Something Simple" with the Mike Samme Singers 1630 Radio 2 Sunday afternoon came immediately before "Cheerful Charlie Chester" with almost inevitably flipping Arthur Askey pretending to be an unmusical bee. That was when I went back to Radio 4 every Sunday afternoon. I live in hope of learning there is a special circle of hell for people like them; where they keep company with performers like Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, Glen Miller, The Osmonds, The Carpenters and other over hyped and over plugged performers from my childhood. Feel free to add to this list.
@NigelJ , we used to listen to all those shows you mentioned, when we were high up on the Pennines journeying back from visiting my parents on the West Coast. Happy memories and also Sing something Simple @Bluejayway , we loved it
I also enjoy reading but go to the library regularly and read between three and six books a week - mainly novels now. Some novels nowadays are exceptionally long in comparison to the 'old days'. Some of them quite often have 500 - 600 pages. We have been reducing the number of books we have on our shelves by selling them. Mrs Shiney has an Amazon bookshop but the books go out fairly slowly. I'm the packaging department . All money goes to charity. Some, surprisingly, go for a lot more than the original flyleaf price but they are usually ones that are out of print.
The last two Strike novels topped a thousand pages each. Hell on the wrists. Nothing a bit of sensible editing couldn't have solved.
We never have nor o watch soaps... makes me cringe. We do fpllow crime progtammes, Aussie and Canadian ones are good. We recently started Homocide (Australian series ... (The cases and crimes actioned by the Victoria (Australia) homicide squad, with many cases based of true events. There are over 500 episodes!
I do watch Gogglebox sometimes. You get to see what's on Netflix, which we don't have. But I do get fed up with all the swearing - the "f" word is used so much , even by the ones with the posh sofas! I may sound old, but it is unnecessary.
I am not going to bother either, but mostly because the storyline of the last one was too grim to qualify as “entertainment” and I had to skip chapters (which I never do when reading) when Robin was incarcerated within a highly abusive religious community. I enjoy the Strike/Robin relationship, but that's not enough to counteract the depressingly violent themes.
