My A. Belladonna is showing a small green 'nose'. It's in a pot in the greenhouse, I'd given up on it. Help- what should it be doing at this time of year?

That's what mine are doing too, Liz - I've brought mine in and am watering and feeding, in the hope they'll be ready around Christmas - they were last year from starting at about this time.

Mine has grown a bit but it isn't happy, the leaves have got a yellow border. The ordinary ones are growing now, some of the bulbs are getting quite fat.

Are you feeding it, Liz? The instructions that I was given a while back said to keep the plant watered and fed until August, let the compost dry out, trim back the leaves, and keep the plant dry and frost free, then bring back to the warmth in early spring and water and feed.

I've seen other completely different instructions, and I know some people just keep them going all the time. So far what I've done this year is to do as per instructions, but brought them back indoors, and started watering at the end of
September, and the leaves are getting quite long now, but not yet showing any signs of a flower stem. I'm hopeful they'll be showing signs of flowering by Christmas. [IMG]

I didn't have enough leaf to trim! I am now keeping it dry and frost free [I hope]. As it's supposed to be hardy I don't want to encourage it to grow now...

I have two Amarillies, but due to a slight compulsive nature I have .....ur LOADS of hippeastrums and they all behave differently.

I understand that as long as you give them a two month dormant period it does not matter when you let them start again. Bella Donna has just always looked dead, H. Papillon started to come to life then went back - I think I watered it too much and if your is going yellow, could be same problem.

My present line is to keep them fairly dry and under fed untill they really get going, so fingers crossed!

My Hippeastrums have been in leaf all summer. Apple Blossom has died back and I've cut the leaves to about 1" from the neck of the bulb. The leaves on the red ones are still very green and healthy looking so I'll just let them take their course. They are getting very little water now though.

The offsets have made nice little bulbs but I think it will be another year before they bloom

The same happened with mine. Lovely leaves but no flower bud. I've done the same as you Frogesque and cut back the leaves. Doubt if I'll get any flowers this winter but I won't give up on them.
I've just bought a new one and am awaiting growth. They're amazing bulbs and so rewarding when they do flower.
