      Well I hope I'm not saying this too soon, but I think you all might have nailed the problem regarding overheating.
      It's not shut down on me since I've had it on a hard surface, so hopefully it will be OK now.

        That sounds good :) , though have you given it a blast of air / suction from the vac to clear out any fluff from the vents as it doubtless has some in there if you have been using it on soft materials all the time; bound to help keep it running cooler / last longer.

          The times I have opened up a laptop/netbook and it's covered in dust, I always clean the fan blades with an artist brush.
          As it can build up on moving and static parts, a small amount of lubricant helps on fans and I mean small.

            Years ago I worked next to someone who ate all day while hovering over their keyboard. Figured one day I'd see a line of ants visiting for a smorgasbord :)
