It's been quite rainy here for about a month, which seriously prevents me from treating the roses against aphids and planting out my annual seedlings. Nasturtiums are already flowering in the trays and obviously suffering for space.
Moreover, I had my birthday earlier this month and my husband gave me some digital soil surveying tool (as one of the presents). And I was honestly shocked with the testing results. I have always known that my soil is acidic, but the lowest pH measurement I have ever taken with paper strips was 5.5. Now the tool returned 3.5 in the central beds of shrubs and... this is where I have my syringa 'Miss Kim' and some precious peonies. They prefer alkaline soils!
I was wondering why they would produce such lush foliage but have been refusing to flower for the past several years. And now I know...
I'm even thinking of uprooting them and just giving them away to other gardener friends locally. I can probably use the space for transplanting some of my rhododendrons, which definitely need more space and sunlight.
The other option is reworking the soil. I'd love to have a lilac shrub in full bloom...
Now the pictures of last Sunday:

I had to climb on the roof of the summer shed to capture it closer.
