Its a nice city and quite interesting. The seals are lovely even though they are noisy and smelly. [IMG] Will you be touring around?

Sea Lions, Shiney (they have little ears and might have heard you :D )
It's a coach tour so yes we will be touring round but round the canyons and Nat Parks. SF is four day add on at the end.

Sorry strongy [IMG] . I just like looking at all different creatures and trying to photograph them but I'm not good with names [IMG]

What canyons and NP's will you be seeing? It seems like a great holiday.

This is the green Hawai'ian turtle. It is an endangered species and there are strongly enforced laws about them. If one of them comes up onto the beach you have to move at least 20ft away from it. The islanders used to eat them but are now very protective of them.

They are unable to retract their heads so are susceptible to predator attacks.

In this picture the beach is empty but not because the people were complying with the law - there just weren't any people around!

As they are endangered they are now breeding them in a sealife park and releasing suitable young ones into the wild. In order to raise the awareness that they are endangered they release them once a year with a big ceremony. It is always done on July 4th and is called Turtle Independence Day. They have some traditional Hula dances and then the baby turtles are carried, by children, in little hammocks down to the water and then released.

Unfortunately I couldn't get any good photos of the turtles swimming because all that could be seen were splashes.

The turtles are raised on the island of Oahu (Waikiki and Pearl Harbour) but are released on the island known as Big Island (which is the only island with the official name of Hawai'i). The ceremony is held at a private beach belonging to the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel who help finance the rearing of the turtles [IMG] [IMG]

These were just a few miles along the coast from Mauna Lani.

Shiney, I have only just managed to log on, fantastic pics, as usual.
The only Dolphins I've seen were for a few minutes following our boat in St Pete in Florida in the rain. Shortly after, a storm got up and we were sea sick for hours. Turtles, I have yet to see.

Re Canyons, Grand Canyon, Bryce, Zion and Canyons Nat Parks, Also we are starting of in Denver and going through South Dakota then to Salt Lake City ending up in Vegas.

                Thanks strongy :o

If you are starting in Colorado you might get a chance to visit Mesa Verde NP. If it is possible it is something not to be missed. It is the only NP that is not dedicated for its scenery etc. Although its scenery is good it is a NP because of its historic worth.

The Anasazi Indians built their homes high up in the cliff face. They were there for hundreds of years and then suddenly disappeared - thought to be because of climate change. Their buildings were made of brick and are still in remarkable condition. I didn't have a digi camera when I was there but I shall see if I can photograph some pictures that are in print.
