Got an email from 'apple.co.uk' informing me that I need to verify my Apple account:

    "Dear Customer,

We need to ask you to complete a short and brief step to securing and validating your account information.

www.dodgylinkremoved Failure to complete our validation process will result in a suspension of your Apple ID.

We take every step needed to automatically validate our users, unfortunately in your case we were unable to. The process only takes a couple of minutes and will make sure there is no interruption to your account.

Wondering why you got this email?
This email was sent automatically during routine security checks. We are not completely satisfied with your account information and require you to update your account to continue using our services uninterrupted.

For more information, see our FAQ.

    Thanks,
    Apple Customer Service
    "

But I don't have an Apple account! (and it was sent from a different email address than the one displayed, plus the link was not to Apple). So watch out as they're probably after any naughty images you've got stored on iCloud.

Are they able to pick up the naughty images I've got stored in my head - as I seem to have my head in the clouds a lot of the time? :yikes:

OMG Has Mrs Scrungee bought a diamond engagement ring (she's still waiting for one), or is it just another dodgy attachment?

This email (for a pack of batteries costing £3) is obviously not from Poundland!

Another warning. I just got an e-mail purporting to be a remittance advice from Anglia Engineering Solutions Ltd. If you get one, do NOT open the attachment! I looked it up, an excerpt...
"Remittance Advice from Anglia Engineering Solutions Ltd [ID 0182S] with a malicious Excel XLS attachment is another one from the current bot runs which try to download various Trojans and password stealers especially banking credential stealers, which may include cridex, dridex, dyreza and various Zbots, cryptolocker, ransomware and loads of other malware on your computer. They are using email addresses and subjects that will entice a user to read the email and open the attachment."

I suppose we can never warn people often enough:-

Never open an attachment in an email unless you were already expecting it.

If you think it may be genuine, but weren't expecting it, then you should do the following:

If it seems to be from a friend, send them an email (not by clicking on 'Reply') and ask them whether they sent it to you.

If it seems to be from a business (ebay, Amazon, a bank, insurance or from a business you deal with), go into your account the normal way or email someone you know in the business and check.

When I worked for a bank we were always told to look up phone numbers ourselves and never use the ones customers gave us, same principle really.

A different bank in the same town as me had a call supposedly from a firm of solicitors that had an account there, saying that they were coming down in half an hour to pick up a bankers draft (guarranteed cheque) for silly money.

The girl taking the phone call used the number they gave her to call back and confirm, which she did (they called at lunchtime, knowing they would be short staffed)

They picked up the draft, went straight to London, bought Kruggerands and were never seen again.

Phone number they gave her was the phone box at the top of the high street.

Really glad to see this thread still on the go. As Freddie says there is still a raft of "Invoice" emails doing the rounds at the moment. Be aware.

Keep getting courier notifications with attachments from the likes of DHL.genuine_email99@hotmail saying they failed to deliver a parcel.

There's been a nasty rash of those recently. Blocking your popups might help.
